Regarding the

Characterisation

of a Faction most

Cruelly Spurned;

and the

Virtues

of

Disestablishmentarianism
----------------
By Dr. Trau

It is a melancholy subject to those, of whom among us are given to the particular disposition of being infatuated in the Lore & Histories & Tales within the Realm of Gielinor, which is to say, the game known to us as RuneScape, even when not especially given to the maladies of the weaker Man, it is fitting to be seen throwing a fit upon.

I speak, of course, of the state of a most undistinguished Faction: the Godless.

I think it is agreed by all parties, that this most unflattering representation of a faction that may be have been galvanised to become a truly atypical Faction in that it represented a possible Alliance of Mortals who, in their nobility of Charackter and Mind, sought independence from the whims of the Gods, is in its present state mired in a truly deplorable condition, a very additional grievance; and that, given the adequate Rejuvenation of the Charackteristics and Identity of the Faction, it yet retains the chance to rise again as an Important Player within the current State of Affairs; to writ, the Race for Gielinor & her Anima & her Peoples.

As to my own part, having turned my thoughts for many years, upon this important subject, and maturely weighed the several schemes of our most respected Lorenaabe-colleagues, I have always found them grossly mistaken in their computation. It is true, that a Faction lacking the patronisation of a Sponsor-God is one that cannot muster a Power & Influence of similar significance. Yet if we attempt to substitute the unsubstitutable with pale reflections of Divine Might, such as the inestimable Vorago, we merely plug the hole caused by the Differences in Power, not the true gaping ideological void that plagues the Faction in discussion. A Negation & Denial of one thing is, in and of itself, not sufficient to support a movement that seeks to overthrow the very gods themselves.
I shall now therefore humbly propose my own thoughts, which I hope will not be liable to the least objection.

I have been assured by a very knowing wizard of my acquaintance in the Tower, that the Player-Charackter's ego today is a powder keg, and the Gods a bunch of loiterers smoking in an arsenal. As we of the Lore community witnessed, Saradomin's premature downfall was in no small part caused by his roguish assault upon the person of the Player-Charackter in conjunction with the uttering of what some may consider ungentlemanly words, no doubt fuelled by his desperation in his war-making against the Kinshra horde.

I do therefore humbly offer it to publick consideration, that regarding the Treatment & Welfare of the Faction, the present antitheistic element be synthesised with a new element of Thought; namely, that individuals within the greater Mortalkind are better off as a proud and independent freedman, much Trials & Tribulations though he may find, as opposed to a pampered Slave in servile servitude to a god who, in the grand scheme of things, measure the lives of Mortalkind in hundreds and thousands. Such ideas when seeded will, I have been assured, greatly increase Player resentment toward the gods in general, and further contribute toward the Ego-stroking needed to energise the Player-Character.

It is the nature of the Player-Charackter to self-aggrandise and propagate the myth of the Hero. We must therefore, in order to create a Faction that lacks the patron-gods of the other Factions palatable to the taste of the Player-Charackters, include a narrative hook in the Godless. A narrative of the Under-Dog, who, though much put upon, is nonetheless fiercely protective of its Self.

Further-more, by allowing the Player-Charackter to take the place of the Moral Champion, the Godless fills at once its dearth of relevant Non-Player-Charackters, as well as gaining its very own "God". By focusing not in the very real rewards of following a god, but rather the moral dimension of "being a free man", we may yet turn around the Sinking Ship of the Godless.

I am Biehn, and I'm here to ask you a question. Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow? 'No!' says the man in Varrock, 'It belongs to the King.' 'No!' says the man in Entrana, 'It belongs to God.' 'No!' says the man in Ardougne, 'It belongs to the Market.'

I rejected those answers; instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose... Godless, a faction where the common man would not fear the censure of the priest, where the soldier would not be bound by petty religion, Where the great multitude of mortalkind would not be constrained by the few squabbling gods! And with the sweat of your brow, Godless can be your faction as well.
