Guthix the being is dead, but I think the tree could be an attempt by the druids to keep alive the wisdom of Guthix.

To provide a sort of repository of the lessons of Guthix- but not create a godlike being or something that could impose its will upon the world.

More like an interactive library of past writings than a living person/god. "We call it being a hero"

Guthix IS alive, yes.
Within the World Guardian, and the memories found through Divination... and the three other places around the world that have stored memories belonging to Guthix.
