Really appreciate the support everyone!
@Rondstat, I read through the things you linked and I like a lot of your ideas!
I will be updating and adding to this thread a bit to solidify more my main point, but you've got it; essentially mortals have the ability to form and utilize anima in a unique way, and that way is the creation of the afterlife.
I think this in and of itself is proof that mortal life is valuable. However, what we know of the non-Mah elder gods suggest that there is little to nothing that can distract them from their purpose, their own life cycle. Even a display of great and unique power - while it may perplex, impress, or even surprise Jas - does little for us if the elder gods can drain Gielinor dry and move on as usual. What we really need is something that appeases the elder gods' need to drain Gielinor at all.
And precisely here is where the afterlife fits in so naturally. Imagine the afterlife (the overall collection of all afterlife, created by mortals) as
an everlasting resource of anima
for the elder gods. There are many consequences and caveats that may go along with this (which I will attempt to address in the upcoming update to this thread), but on the surface I see this as a fantastic (and, importantly, plausible, in the face of seemingly impossible odds) way to resolve the annihilation looming on Gielinor's horizon.
