From darkness is born light, the spark of life. The child is full of wonder, imagination and innocence. Thus came Edda-Mah.

From Mah, the light by which to see, the dark in which to hide. The potential for all life, and a place for all things.

From matter is born shape, ever growing and changing. The youth increases in knowledge and power. Thus came Edda-Bik.

From Bik, the clay to shape, to build and destroy, form and reform. The changing of states, of forms, of function.

From the cold is born fear, shrinking and death. The corpse lies still and lifeless. Thus came Edda-Wen.

From Wen, the cold to harden and freeze, to brittle and fracture the clay. The ending of things, to break apart. To reflect on the past.

From the heat is born passion, growth and life. The maiden feels love and joy. Thus came Edda-Ful.

From Ful, the heat to soften and burn, to work and fire the clay. The beginning of things, to start anew. To experience the now.

From life is born experience, wisdom and intelligence. The matron is nurturing and caring. Thus came Edda-Jas.

From Jas, the thought to lead them all. The preparation, the plan, the execution. To look to the future

Friends,

I have recently revisited these thoughts, and I may have found a clearer way from the history of philosophy to distinguish between the roles of Bik and Mah. There was a distinction drawn among some thinkers called the Neo-Kantian philosophers who divided sciences into nomothetic sciences and idiographic sciences.

In short, nomothetic means 'law-positing' ; in a nomothetic attitude, one believes in and seeks regular laws in the world. Idiographic means 'written about one,' in other words: concerning the unique and individual. Bik works with types, forms, which she builds up and tears down. Mah attends to the uniqueness of individuals, the parts known (light) and the parts unknown (dark), or the parts which work or fit together within the whole individual (light) and the parts estranged, which don't work or fit (dark).

I'm not totally sure this is the right distinction for representing the roles of these two elder goddesses, but I think it is helpful, and I will update my thoughts here if I gain any further clarity.

Just to summarize, then, the roles of the elder gods according to some technical philosophical language:

Jas - protentional
Ful - impressional
Wen - retentional
Bik - nomothetic
Mah - idiographic

I'm not sure about Bik. She represents alteration, but judging by how you described nomothetic, I think that actually suits Ful more, as she represents constancy, since I think constancy is actually more about adhering to rules, while Bik could too arbitrary for laws.

That said, Mah's is actually accurate, since she represents potential, which covers the unknown.

That's a fair critique. I think this account can work, but I'll need to develop it more. My sketchy idea is that alteration is all about some regularities transforming into other regularities according to further regularities. I will come back to this, but for now I'm kind of scattered with tons of work to do, and I'm not yet convinced myself that 'nomothetic' and 'idiographic' dimensions of consciousness are so fundamental as to correspond to the roles of the elder goddesses.
