Out of curiosity, do elves commit inbreeding? According to the unofficial RS wikia page "Elven Clans," elves are sorted into clans based on bloodline. If you have Cadarn bloodline, you belong in the Cadarn clan. Like the Gorajo, you are given your role at birth.
Whether you can choose to change clans, I do not know, but the answer is most likely a no, since there would be favoritism and unproportionate levels in each clan. No one would want to join the boring Cryws clan, and most elves are pacificistic and wouldn't want to enlist in the army (Cadarn/Iowerth clans) etc.
Further evidence that elves commit interbreeding is the fact that everyone has the same last name among clan members. Arianwyn Cadarn, Elen Cadarn, Lunet Cadarn, etc. and having the same last name suggests you are related right? They could all be cousins, sisters, brothers, for all we know!
Another thing I noticed is that in the Tales of the God Wars 2 stories, Helwyr likes to call his fellow clan members his "brothers"
and I don't think he is speaking on a "homie"-related level...
Even the definition of "clan" suggests family member. O_O
Wouldn't surprise me.
Runescape doesn't need a hero...it needs a villain. An all encompassing force of evil that will remain ever-threatening and use chaos to make the peoples of Gielinor tolerate each other, grow strong together, and fight side by side against this evil. I am that villain.
Yes and no. The clans are probably large enough for intermarriage to not cause inbreeding and marriage alliances would be a great way to secure clans together, (aside from the whole devotion to Seren thing).
We will move across their borders and pick our teeth with their bones. We will flush them from their homes and crush them beneath our paws. We will finally be free of the filthy Brown Tigers once and for all! White Tiger Kingdom! White Tiger World!

So do elves inbreed with family members?
Not sure the last name thing is real tbh, or just the Wikia "filling in the gaps" as it has a nasty habit of doing. Like their reconciling the weird "Draynor is Drakan's brother" bit by declaring his name to be "Draynor Drakan", even though he's never called that in canon.

But how do they keep track of whose family line is who? Someone you are dating could be your cousin and neither party would know.
Don't worry about inbreeding mutations, dis form or whatever. If you know about Seren and what she did. You might understand why them Elves aren't all mutants looking freaks.
I swear I thought this was going down a different train of thought than where it ended up. >.<
Either way, I always figured that the clan names being the last name of a person were some kind of honorary title type of thing that people get for siding with them rather than names you get just from being born into the clan itself (though that might happen too). Then again, the clan titles we can get are 'of the <clan>' rather than just the clan name, so maybe you're onto something here and Seren's influence on them accounts for that somehow.

Mad, see my thingy two posts up. Note also the "Ederns", part of Clan Iorwerth (disproving the last name thing as it is).

This is Kitty, by the way.
Well, that explains why I haven't seen your old name around for a while at least. Was kinda wondering about that
I actually forgot about the Ederns tbh. One of them was a...librarian we met during Plague's End or something, right? Either way you make a good point. I'm not 100% sure what the wiki (and game) says about this sort of thing, so all I have to go off of as I write this is just conjecture based off of how elves in other fantasy settings do things in regards to family names and lineages.

How do elves even sort the different subfamilies in a clan? They all have the same last name! Unless there is an elven genealogist that keeps track of all the subfamilies in a clan to prevent incestuous relationships, an elf could be dating their cousin for all they know. Also, If, say, the Meilyr clan has a population of 1000, and they all mate with different non-familial elves of their own clan, they are eventually going to run out of combinations and force to commit inbreeding either way.
Also, i don't think cross-clan marriages are a thing. That would ruin the very definition of a clan.
