Hello and welcome to another instance of "Penny interprets what could be graphics blunders and shortcuts as meaningful willful choices!" This time it isn't focused on fairies and their eyeballs, this thread is all about the lethal beauty who got no time for that love B.S.,
Laniakea
!
So anyhow, Laniakea made a giant splash on social media when Mod NicePants revealed her concept art and stated that she would be the new Slayer Master in the new Land out of Time content. A very pretty Slayer Master in an elaborate corseted dress, with only a large spear, a voodoo doll, and flasks of green potion hanging off her waist to indicate that she is dangerous. Already, she was a mess of contradictions. How could she be an actual Slayer Master in that sort of dress? And how is her hair so good?
And when she finally appeared in game, the final design changes from the concept design were even more mysterious. Why were her eyes such a noticeably bright shade of green? Why was she slack-jawed? Was that a modelling mistake? But, her dialogue provides a clue! She is indeed a Slayer Master, she just does her slaying using potent poisons that she seems to make herself, so she doesn't actually need to fight and she is only in danger of injury for a brief moment.
Is Laniakea responsible for the Deathtouched darts? They very much sound like something she would use all the time. Is there even lore attached to the darts?
She also reveals that she microdoses on the poisons to get her immunity up. Her entire dialogue (even the cutscene) is delivered in deadpan, emotionless, even the parts about her horrible past. I think that this might be because she accidentally discovered something like a botox therapy, and as a result, her facial muscles are underdeveloped. But, no wrinkles, no scars!
Humility is self-destruction, pride is the destruction of all else.
And He said, "
She's on the surface a really boring character, if beautiful edglelords aren't your thing. But she illustrates how disturbed the Slayer Masters are, even better than Sumona and Morvan, and to some extent Lapalok, do. Her poison drinking may be excused as building herself up to be a badass who is immune to poisoning, but it looks like it makes her expressionless and emotionless on the outside. It is sort of a match to how emotionless she is on the inside as well, as her past seemingly left her a dead poisonous wasteland inside, fearful of love and closeness, craving a found family and solitude at the same time. She's fascinating.
And her past offers so many jumping of points for future content if she wasn't lying about it all. When she said she came from some kill or be killed village in the far east, does that imply she came from Meiyerditch or somewhere else in the Sanguinesti region? Or does her Hawaiian name and sort of Polynesian spear hint that she comes from the Wushanko Isles? It would explain her familiarity with fugu toxin. And that tale of a treasure, used not to inspire, but to instead frighten children? What kind of curse must be on it?
Um, I have no speculation on her absurdly bright green eyes other than she's just that toxic.
Humility is self-destruction, pride is the destruction of all else.
And He said, "
Let there be light.

And then there were

Too true, that is why I called her a beautiful edgelord. It is weird how often this kind of character shows up in anime, and how tired this trope can get if you watch too much anime. Hopefully Jagex expands more on her character. She has enough plot hooks in her back story to suggest that maybe they will, but then again, she's a Slayer Master. The PVMers that interact with her most often aren't likely to demand lore.

I had just written off that she was a huge possessed doll herself considering the dead, pupil-less green eyes and low facial animations but this makes WAY more sense!

I couldn’t quite put my thoughts into words but this is completely spot on!
I’d be cool if in a future quest we discover that the doll she wears on her hip contains the soul of the original Laniakea. And she’s actually an old hunched witch who took Laniakea’s form. And whatever backstory that’d entail. Kinda like the Red Witch from Game of Thrones.
Honestly, just about anything to make her less cringe.

Bu the brainless herd of thirsty PvMers love her.
oooh, I fully support this!!
To those cursed by war and pest, Come into the light of Armadyl and rest. This is the law of Armadyl.
I just encountered the name Laniakea in another context.
I knew it was Hawaiian when I first encountered it. But I didn't know anything else about it.
Now I have learned that it is also the name of the supercluster of which the Local Group, including our own Milky Way Galaxy, is a part.
So she is named after something big.
