back when i was a wee schoolboy, i remember only 3 gods: good Saradomin, Bad zamorak and guthix who just wanted balance.

that's it.
yes, i know some other gods were hinted in quests like Zaros and Amardyl, and that there are some gods that only have powers in the desert like Elide and Ictharyn

but in the grand scheme of things, there were just 3 gods, the good, the bad, and the ugly.
being religious in Gilenore was simple: you want to be a good guy? pick saradomin. you wanna be a power-hungry jerk? pick zamorak. you just want the world take its natural course and not pick a side? you follow guthix.

now we have all kind of gods which i can't for the life of me understand,
Seren? Zaros? Sliske? Amardyl?
do they stand for any values or natural fundamentals, or do they just rule a spesific race and that's it?

Each god has it's own preffered agenda (being god of ''...'') and most of them have one or more favorite races but it usually doesn't mean being race-specific.

Yes, recently for gameplay reasons there have been added (and killed) too many gods, since dealing with angry waitress, lazy shopkeeper or stubborn fisherman players considered to be uninteresting.

I approve your 3-sided comment preffering reasonable minimalism, which was whole world turning around, but I'm afraid we have to adapt to gods becoming slayer tasks, so we need more than 3 now.

I wonder where the path takes us...Yet I wouldn't be surprised that said (well 2 now) would make a dualistic pair to other 2 light and dark as a mirror to elder 4.

Since god is what our minds make it, let's see who it will be in the end.

It's been a gradual process, with an increase after the 6th age started (2013).

Zamorak, Saradomin, and Guthix are the most widely worshipped gods in-universe, and the most recognisable gods out-of-universe, but they weren't the only gods for long.

Already in Temple of Ikov, 2002, it was stated there were at least 20 gods, with Saradomin, Zamorak, and Guthix as the only gods acknowledged by Saradominists. That quest also introduced us to Armadyl and revealed that Zamorak used to be mortal.

Over time more and more gods were added. Most of them weren't as prominent as the "big three", but don't make the mistake they were less important for that reason. After all, Zaros was always heavily implied to be one of the most powerful gods. And in the God Wars dungeon, the armies of Bandos and Armadyl fought on equal footing with the armies of Saradomin and Zamorak.

With the 6th age and the death of Guthix, the gods can physically return to Gielinor again. That's where we are now. The gods are center-stage so a lot of effort has been made to flesh them out. Armadyl was, like I said earlier, first mentioned in Temple of Ikov, but he's certainly gotten a lot more attention in recent years. Now I'm fairly certain he's more popular than any of the "big three", save Guthix, among players.

----

Most gods don't embody an aspect of nature these days. They have some sort of philosophy they espouse and are the "god of". Zamorak preaches growth through adversity, strength through chaos, so he is the god of chaos. Likewise, Armadyl believes in Justice as an ideal, but he is not Justice itself. There are god emissaries in-game to tell you more about each god's individual beliefs.

Some gods are primarily worshipped by other races, like Armadyl and the Aviansie and Bandos with the goblins, ogres, ourgs etc., but most gods would welcome anyone willing to worship them.

And Sliske is not really a god. He's a trollish Mahjarrat.

I have noticed your kind does tend to blindly stumble forward towards danger simply because it exists. What is your word for that?

Over time the lore of the game has expanded to explain more about the universe of runescape. In doing so, more gods were revealed, as well as their origins (which used to be extremely vague) and ideologies (which now are way less idealized, with every god having its strengths and flaws).
The notion of true good and evil has been thrown out of the window, in my opinion a good thing for how cliche it is.
The stakes have been raised by introducing the "True" gods: the elder gods that shaped all of Gielinor. Not because they were "good", but because they did (for we can not fathom the desires of an elder god, or even if they possess such a thing). At the same time, this introduces new threats: the Elder Gods might just as easily destroy Gielinor and revise the universe if they see fit. Meanwhile, the gaping maw of eternity know as Xau-Tak is oozing into Gielinor, with equally incomprehensible desires, but clearly ones that do not
yet
align with those inhabiting Gielinor.

And then we have the resident troll named Sliske, who for reasons decided that letting the above forces tear the universe apart will be "fun"..

Long story short: the story has become waaaay more interesting than simply having the "good", "bad" and "neutral".

My heresy senses are tingling.

There is only one god, and his name is Saradomin.

Zamorak is a demon that cowers in the light of Saradomin, and Guthix is some superstitious none sense that those heathen druids in Taverley believe.

Faith is the only path to salvation, so no more questions.

Only 3 gods were widely known back then because the lore was still in development at the time, with subtle hints that there would be/were more gods to come. Also, later on in certain quests we learn that the Gods are actually pretty flawed and some have even had a change of heart about what values they want to embody and what alliances/rivalries mean to them.

Zaros was first mentioned in '03 from The Digsite quest. Armadyl is mentioned in '02, and Bandos in Another Slice of H.A.M , months before the GWD was released (he was called the "Goblin God&quot ;) .
