Dear God no. We don't need more skills. We don't need to hide lore behind grinding and other skill requirements. I'd rather not further disinterest the player base from lore.
That's what questing's about.

That is why so few do them. They don't want to bore themselves with grinding.

Heavy requirements leads to a lack of interest. A lack of interest leads to low activity. Low activity leads to a low return on investment for Jagex. As such, we don't get as many quests as we should.

This Mahjarrat gets it.

It would be even worse if Archaeology was an elite skill..
To those cursed by war and pest, Come into the light of Armadyl and rest. This is the law of Armadyl.

I think its a great idea in theory, but it will probably be too much of a grind as a skill. I love the potential for lore and new items, but if I have to dig up and examine thousands of urns to get to the next piece or lore it will lose its charm. Unless they have a new model planned for training a skill that is completely new. To make this skill fun and accessible they would have to be willing to not make it a massive repetitive grind, which may be hard to balance.

I could however see it being a new activity unlocked through mid level quests, only needing endgame stats to craft the new items (the ones meant for endgame play anyway). However mid levels can still excavate the plans along with the lore bits so its accessible. They could include it in the clue scroll rework as well by adding ancient clues which could be found while excavating with new puzzles and rewards. :D They can even add a new room in the poh that you can store some of the relics and translated texts you find, and perhaps use it to gain useful buffs for a short period of time by interacting with some of them.
I do puzzles. (And hunter is best skill.)

Archaeology would have endless lore content integrated into the gameplay. From everything 6th age details or stories that we missed such as of individual soldiers who fought in WE1/WE2, 5th age to 4th age lore, then 3rd, 2nd and 1st age content in succession of leveling up. Excavation of ruins/battlesites and etc, Gielinor has a long history that would get fleshed out in the Archaeology skill.

Archeology is one of the three skills that I really want in Runescape, the other two being Bard related and maybe Astronomy.

However, I don't know how it would fit into Runescape. I just can't think of any ways to train it without making it an extremely long grind and very boring.

World of Warcraft did a great job bringing in Archeology, but the way they did, just wouldn't work in Runescape. It would be too much like Treasure Trails. Not to mention Runescape just doesn't have the extremely vast backstory that World of Warcraft has.
Come the Sixth-Age, the world will need the World Guardian.

Actually there would be many untold stories to excavate in Archaeology, look at how old Gielinor is. Just look at how many places or things we could excavate here(Especially dragontooth isle's mystery): http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/Gielinorian_God_Wars

The wiki in the page talking about the god wars mentioned how there were many different species/races and nations before they took place that got destroyed, many of the settlements or cities of today were built on former battlefields according to origins of Gielinor the video near the end.

There's still alot of third age and second age lore or mysteries we have not excavated yet. Such as what Armadylean civilization was like in Kandarin(Especially Feldip hills) or how Saradomin's 2nd age kingdom looked at(Entrana, Southern Asgarina, Kandarin, Uzer). The sites of the ancient teleports also make good excavation sites such as Edgeville, the dungeon there, ice mountain, swamps of east Morytania, Canifis and underneath Varrock itself.

It would be a great opportunity to flesh out the unknown story in the other ages/times. Some especially good key areas for Archaeology I think are Crandor and Mazcab.

Oh, get off it. Everything worthwhile in this game requires time/effort. It's kinda something that RS is known for. You grind for that new armor, for that skillcape, for that new quest. Where's the sense of fulfillment or adventure if you complete it in a week? You probably whined about the Menaphos reputation too, didn't you?

Okay, sorry for the rant. I support!

You have an interesting definition of "effort".
Runescape doesn't need a hero...it needs a villain. An all encompassing force of evil that will remain ever-threatening and use chaos to make the peoples of Gielinor tolerate each other, grow strong together, and fight side by side against this evil. I am that villain.
