I was bumbling around Zaros' throne room at the Senntisten digsite, larping as a Zarosian Priest , as you do, and realised something, although there's a chance I may be taking things too literal.
The platform on which Zaros' throne sat, and littered throughout the throne room in various places, are Dark Animica rocks, presumably formed from the residual energies of Zaros' original body's leftover power.
After heading to Freneskae's Elder halls to confirm my memory, Mah's hatching chamber shares rocks, which presumably, are of a similar substance, a type of Dark Animica, and we also know that Zaros, between him and Seren, was the elder sibling, by how much I don't know, but Zaros was Mah's firstborn, according to his own word at least, so presumably Mah created him from the same material she herself was, at least, partially made out of.
She later created Seren out of 'Light animica', of which we don't see any of, on Freneskae, presumably because it contrasted her own nature, as a means to entice Zaros back to her.
I believe this, potentially, provides a clue as to Mah's role as an Elder God and, maybe, a clue to the nature of Dark Anima, which presumably is related to Dark Animica, the mineral form of this substance... presumably, again, I could be taking the names too literally, but right now there's not much else to go on.
A smaller inkling of evidence as to what Mah/Zaros are made from, is how Zaros was able to enter, with permission, granted, the World Guardian's body, without any indication of harm of poisoning from our Dark Anima aura, which, for normal Gods, is supposedly toxic.
I believe in past cycles, Mah's role may have been linked to the relationship between Dark and 'normal' anima, the apparent lack of natural Dark Anima, may be a result of Mah's stillbirth, leaving the Elders unable to balance it without her expertise.
This could in principle explain why Zaros cannot make life, he is made from dark anima, thus is an antithesis to life energy.
