Sally and "The Needle Skips"

Sally was the tall blue-skinned protagonist of the now cancelled RuneScape spin-off RuneScape: Idle Adventures . She was the one who discovered the Needle buried underneath White Wolf Mountiain, and 'used the power of the Needle to revert time and restore Anima to Gielinor'.

It would now seem that her character and story are being made canon in the upcoming quest The Needle Skips , where a character who matches her turns up dead in the Piscatoris area, with "Megan" written in blood beside her. From what we gather, the Needle will now be in our hands as we try to figure out why she was there and who killed her.

Is this actually Sally? Or just a character that is meant to canonically represent her? Janos Morgan of Asgarnia

Jagex are not allowed to use Sally: the character is an original creation of Hyper Hippo.

That said, they are allowed to alude to her, as well as create new characters who are similar to her. The "Sally" in the quest will be a new character, clearly meant to evoke old Sally for those who know of her. We'll see her alive, and may even get to speak to her, due to the time travel nature of the quest.

Interestingly, the Sally in RuneScape Idle Adventures also used The Needle to unravel and respin the threads of fate (ie. travel in time).

It's unlikely things are as they appear to be: I strongly suspect the young girl's name isn't even Sally, and that the youg girl and older blue woman are one and the same. Remember; time travel is an important element to solving the quest, so time travel is also probably involved in setting up the mystery in the first place.

Maybe our young blue friend is an orphan who ends up getting knocked up by a mysterious blue man after a surreal and serendipitous fling together after which he disappears.

She gives birth but the procedure has complications; she finds out she is intersex and the carnage the baby wrought upon her system involved large-scale destruction upon her estrogen glands and female reproductive system. As she is intersex, and Gielinor was in its 50s stage, the doctors opt to force her to undergo gender and sex reassignment without her opinion. They also remove her/his baby and put it into an orphanage. She, now a he, is emotionally devastated and swears to have revenge on the man who ruined his life by impregnating him.

The Needle grants him the ability to change time Sal can do anything with it a grizzled blue man contacts him and tells him of a dangerous assassin who only Sal can stop by going back in time. Sal agrees to help, but only because he wants to actually use the Needle to kill the man who ruined her life.

Sal goes back in time and watches herself as Sally looking for the man, but the man never shows up--Sally ends up running into Sal and Sal realizes he is the man. Sal and Sally end up having relations, but Sal knows he must disappear afterwards.

Sal resumes his quest to stop the dangerous assassin, but the assassin is always one step ahead of Sal, which seems impossible because Sal is from the future. Nevertheless, Sal makes a rookie mistake and gets hit in the face by a cannon.

A mysterious blue man, which could only be the assassin, is the first on the scene. He helps Sal use the Needle to take Sal back to modern time. Sal needs extensive reconstructive surgery, but the reconstructive surgery goes poorly and Sal's face is mutilated. As Sal's surgery needed modern day technology Sal had to return to the present for quite some time. Sal mopes around a hospital for a number of months as he heals.

Unfortunately, there is an attack on the hospital that Sal is staying at--the assassin who somehow is in the present attempts to kill Sal in the hospital. Sal escapes and is on the run--realizing that the only way Sal can be safe from the assassin is if Sal kills him first he comes up with a nefarious plan. Sal time travels back to when Sal first met the mysterious grizzled man, who (if you hadn't figured it out yet) is actually Sal. Older Sal sends younger Sal on the journey to kill the assassin.

Knowing younger Sal will fail older Sal will be there when younger Sal is hit in the face with the cannon to kill the assassin when the assassin comes to help. It turns out that the older Sal is actually the one who fires the cannon which hits younger Sal in the face because the assassin is taking to long to come out.

Nevertheless, the plan works, the assassin swoops in to help younger Sal. After younger Sal is sent back to the present older Sal shoots the assassin with an arrow, but the assassin pulls out what looks like the Needle and teleports away. Older Sal is wrought with paranoia--he starts tracing down leads, killing children he thinks will grow up to be the assassin.

He fails in his task; he never is able to track down the assassin as a child--which leads him to confront his final option--kill the assassin when the assassin goes to kill him in the hospital. At this point in time, Sal has gone stir-crazy. He mistakes older Sal for the assassin and attempts to kill him, inadvertently becoming the assassin he was trying to kill.

The problem is agreements like these need to be mutual.

Jagex partnered with HyperHippo, HyperHippo weren't contracted; as long as that partnership was maintained, HyperHippo could use Jagex's IP, and Jagex could use HyperHippo-created additions to it. It was a mutually beneficial deal, allowing both sides to benefit from their relationship with the other.

That partnership has since been dissolved; HyperHippo are no longer involved with RuneScape, and are thusly no longer using Jagex's IP. HyperHippo still own the "Sally" character however: if the character were used directly, Jagex would need to either buy the right to the character from HyperHippo (which they may have done, since HyperHippo don't actually need it), or pay HyperHippo royalties for her use.

Jagex won't have forced HyperHippo to relinquish control over their own unique creations within the mobile game, because HyperHippo wouldn't have agreed to those terms. Jagex wanted to work with HyperHippo, not the other way around, so they needed to make sure the deal on the table was an attractive one. If Jagex owned all the copyrights, HyperHippo could have been screwed out of most of the royalties of the game too.

However, in this case what Jagex have most probably done is created their own character, made her a girl, colored her blue, and called her Sally. As long as she doesn't closely resemble the concept art made for RuneScape Idle Adventures, she is more or less her own unique character.

Part 3

It turns out after the Assassin, who is older older Sal, was shot by the arrow by older Sal he time-travelled away dying of his wounds. The last thing he was able to do was head to the adoption agency and steal a blue baby--he just wanted to see his long lost love one more time before he died. As he lies there dying, cradling a baby in his arms, a young adventurer stumbles upon him. The young adventurer had heard about the baby snatcher and was sent to dispatch him. This young adventurer had spent too much time hearing about the escapades of a famous adventurer and was eager to make her mark on history. She slew older older assassin and wrote her name in his blood... "Megan."

Saw this in a movie once-- Predestination .

It is a character that is meant to represent her. In a livestream, they comfirmed her name is Megan. We have no clue if Sally is Canon to teh Rs lore, all we know is the Needle is, and in the quest it will be used by us to solve a murder.

I asked Mod Jack about this on Discord a while ago, and that's not actually true, there's no copyright, or trademark (or whatever the legal term is) infringement if they use Sally's name.



So, I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I'm *think*ing that they'll both canonically exist in this universe, somehow.
