Mod Jack has said that they don't want to choose between the planetary model or the planar model. The planar model is older and more established in-game. Only the Tuska event explicitly suggests the planetary model, as far as I know.
For a time, I believed they might have abandoned the planar model, especially with things like Tuska, but recent updates like the Guthixian echoes makes it seem like they've come to accept it. Zanaris is referred to as the nexus of planes once again, and Tuska is an interdimensional predator.
I thought that it was a mix of both? Some areas are planetary, and some are planar, at the Elders' whim. It's a magical fantasy world. The Laws of Physics are a little wonky here.

I think you are right to say they're using a mix of both. But what "mix" means depends upon how we define each model. If the planetary model says, "There's one plane of existence, containing all the worlds as planets (not including the folded space of pocket dimensions)," and if the planar model says, "There are multiple planes of existence (regardless of whether some worlds share the same plane)"; then the "mix" is still the planar model. At least that's how I've understood it.
Just because this is a universe of magic and fantasy, in which different worlds exhibit different physical and magical laws, does not mean it shouldn't all make sense somehow.
