It's Xau-Tak. While he's been steadily making his way into the spotlight in recent history, learning more about him has actually given some answers to some older lore. Simply saying Zamorak was responsible for all the weirdness in Daemonheim never really fit the bill for his character. Zamorak was using the place as a hideout, but he's not responsible for its existence and nature. Let's make a little checklist for characteristics that are in line with Xau Tak.

Mutation in living beings. Check.

Occult obsessed with necromancy. Check.

Lab created and later abandoned by Dragonkin? Check. This may have been where the scientists at the Dragonkin Lab got their black stone, although it may have simply been way out at Ulthven Kreath.

Actively taints the areas around him? Check.

Portals linked between many worlds? Check.

Manipulative whispering that appeals to the desires of the host in order to bend them to his will and drive them insane? Mega check. You can even hear these whispers sometimes in the Occult Floors.

Black stone hand? Next time you're dunging, pay attention to what's grabbing you in the teleport animation. I always thought this teleport was oddly sinister and had no idea what the purpose for it was. Turns out I was right, and now I can never un-see it. It's very similar to Floor Masters from the Zelda franchise.

Now that I'm almost positive that he has strong influence in Daemonheim, the question is what is he doing down there and what does he want? I think it's safe to say the Smuggler is guarding the place's secrets, but why did Xau want Bilrach to reach the bottom? Did he do something to Bill once he reached his goal? Bill seemed much more polite in DoT than in his chronicles. Xau has had a better foothold in the world since the 2nd age, so why here?

This actually makes a load of sense.

However.

It could also be Kranon, the dragonkin who got pulled into Xau-Tak's Realm (possibly the abyss) and returned as The Ambassador. In the Dragonkin Laboratory, we can find a page which reads, when referring to Kranon, "We'll seal Him, or destroy Him." To me at least this implies that they were successful in Sealing him, as Kranon is known to be alive from Crassian dialogue in Aminishi.

Which begs the question, How is Kranon responsible for the whispering and insanity? The answer is actually surprisingly simple. The "Kreath Takla", Black Stones. The very same we find embedded in Seiryu's shackles, and fused with

The Black Stone Dragon

. I theorised on the RS Discord's Lore discussion, that the Stones act as a Relay for messages, and that they function similarly to Elven Crystal, due to it being stated that they're activated with a "Dissonance Chorus". This indicates that these stones act as a conduit for Xau-Tak's power, as we see with the Bosses in the Elite Dungeons.

Kranon was a dragonkin, he was apparently known by Kerapac and other Dactyl leaders, he was also apparently the only survivor of the Ulthven Kreath incident. Daemonheim is known 100% to be a Dragonkin fortress, to be honest I think Xau-Tak is somewhere in the Abyss, judging by the texture of the Portal in Ulthven Kreath, which is similar to the Sky in Shattered Worlds, which is in the Abyss. You're on to something for sure, but i think it's Kranon they're hiding in there.

I think you may be right about it being Kranon. It would explain why he just recently became active again if he didn't escape until the end of the 5th age. Whatever was down there, Astea and Lexicus both thought it was dangerous enough to throw the whole world into darkness, and Kranon seems to be the queen on Xau-Tak's chess board. It doesn't make much sense for him to be inactive unless he had been imprisoned until recently, and miles beneath Daemonheim seems like just the place where the dragonkin would keep a high profile prisoner. I feel like we're going to get answers in Elite Dungeon 3.

Given how elite dungeons center around Xau-Tak, having the entire skill revolve around this dreaded being would certainly be an interesting spin.

It would also give new interesting ways in which stories can evolve. For we know Zamorak and his followers are strong believers of strength through chaos. For all we know a chaotic entity such as Xau-Tak might manipulate them in aiding it with its devious plans. This might be the sole reason we have such a warped place as Deamonheim in the first place, and why Zamorak saw it as a fitting place for his secret base: he might think being close to the chaotic grasps of Xau-Tak will grant him strength. While in reality he is slowly becoming yet another puppet.

Just to clarify, what teleport animation do you mean? If it's the gatestone teleports, I thought it looked more like a tendril or vine with a mouth than a hand.

Ive thought this for awhile. Its stated strong portal magic is at the bottom of the dungeon which we know to be a dragonkin fortress. Cross reference it with what we know happened with Kranon and strong portal magic and the dots connect. Its sad that poor Bilrach was a puppet all along for a god he knows nothing about.

As for Zammy being an agent of Xau-Tak, absolutely not. Zammy never went to daemonheim until the edicts broke. It may be possible hes hearing the whispers now too but he wont willingly be subserviant to any God which is why he and Zaros had a falling out. Its also possible that his status as a t4 god may prevent him from being effected by whispers like mortals are. I have seen the dark universe yawning, where the black planets roll without aim;
Where they roll in their horror unheeded, without knowledge or lustre or name.

Yes, the gatestone teleport. Take a close look and you can see fingers at the end of it. Also note how it pulls you into and out of the floor and ceiling. This thing may have to do with why the rooms are constantly randomizing themselves.

I sincerely doubt Xau-Tak was originally intended to have anything to do with Daemonheim, but Jagex have already retconned Daemonheim so many times already, it wouldn't be surprising for them to do so again. I also doubt Kranon has anything to do with Daemonheim, since they're likely to be the final boss of the third Elite Dungeon, which is seemingly near Ulthven Kreath, which is where they are seen during Crassian Allegience. Also, Seiryu was corrupted a long time ago, meaning Kranon hasn't only become active recently.

Also, keep in mind that we actually know what was at the bottom of Daemonheim: The Rift, a weakness between dimensions. We also know that Zamorak was actually really on the other side of it, and that judging by his dialogue, Zamorak was at least influencing Bilrach during Nadir (although Nadir and Daemonheim in general is such a mess of unexplained and forgotten plot points it's hard to tell). But it's possible other forces like Xau-Tak were also trying to claw their way through, like it did in Ulthven Kreath.

The Exile: Our last job for Hearthen - the black stones. Once complete, we were to be tolerated no more, so that no other would hear of these stones. He bargained to be the hand to silence us in exchange for his own life. My family; my challem - I long to be with them again. I cannot go on with this knowledge - it is too much to bear. I wish it to end! I noticed this when Ports 3 was released, and immediately thought of Xau-Tak (although we did not actually know the name "Xau-Tak" at the time), but dismissed it as a reference to the ritual marker. After Pieces of Hate, I'm wondering if they did actually mean kreath takla... You never were our brightest star, Khazard. 'Vermin slaughtered like lambs'? What does that even mean?

Another bit of evidence just dropped out of the sky for this theory. The Tainted Shard, which is most likely made of black stone, can be taken into Daemonheim. While it could be said that it's just for the sake of xp, remember that you can't even bring your Gorajo outfits down there.
