a first sketch:

4 years after the end of the Godwars, before Guthix had departed for his second slumber, the 9 greatest mages of the age assembled in Saranthium to discuss the survival of humanity.

Their host was Alan Gumph, eccentric wizard-scholar of Saranthium, renowned among the tiny academic community that survived the end of the Wars for his speculations on the Primordial Realm, his studies on the nail beasts of Mort Myre, and his search for the mythic Elder Hammer, which he believed awoke the Sacred Clay and created the nail beasts.

Most honored among them was Aeternam of Asgarnia, first among the Druids, and soon to become first of the Guardians of Guthix.

Next was Mell of Yan, greatest sorceress in the ages of Gielinor, now very old, who had contended against the Bandosians in Feldip Hills and who banished many spirits, among them the Ogre-spirit Must and the Basilisk-spirit Anathema.

Next came Muhbar of Menaphos, magus supreme in the line of Muh, founder of magic in the East which was distinct from the tradition of Jack and Misalionar in the West.

Also from the desert: Hermes Bimegistus of Ullek, whose esoteric works remain with us today. At this time, the denizens of Sophanem still identified with their lost home of Ullek destroyed only a few generations before. Legendary were his gratitude and awe before Aeternam who froze Balfrug Kreeyath.

Then there was Erik of Rellekka, Chief Seer of the mainland Fremennik. In years past, Erik had forbidden young seers to join the militant Void Knights, but after the return of Guthix and end of the Wars he spoke little and waited and watched for what the new age would bring.

From even farther west came Hinea of Harundri. In her youth, she had left her home near the Dougne and plunged into the treacherous Circleblade Bog which lay about the modern-day lake of Hemenster. She went to warn the ancient spirits of the lake of Ogre Shamans who came to burn away the bog and enslave the spirits. The spirits led her safely to the west where she became a great sorceress.

Strangest of the mages was Attila of Ghorrock, an undead lich, last of the Zarosians in the North, and human custodian of the ritual site for some centuries. It was after the assembly that he persuaded the Mahjarrat for the first time to double the length of time between rituals, for the good of both humans and Mahjarrat.

Youngest among them was Nicholas of Strite. Unknown until the return of Guthix, several humans villages had remained concealed in the region between Lassar and the head of the Lum, whose population descended from ancient cities razed by Zaros. Strite was the most prominent of these villages, and Nicholas was its mage. Strange was the sight of the youth whose dress and dialectic predated the Godwars. The mages of Strite would guide Gielinor’s humans until their destruction in the flames of Garak.

I’ve decided to bump this thread, since it’s one of my favorites. And I just summarized nearly all my other thoughts in a long response on Colossus’s recent thread on summoning and anima .

Also, I’m recording something here for my own record/notes:

topics to be addressed by a good planar theory: planes, shadow realms, the abyss, the void, portals, rifts, teleportation, dimensional barriers, dimensional straddling, aetheric threads, pocket dimensions, and the recession of the runecrafting altars.
