In Desperate Measures, we were introduced to two new castes of Dragonkin: the Nodon and the Aughra. Whilst the Dactyl invented ways to defeat the elder gods, the Syrtes sought to show the elder gods their worth, and the Nodon went into hibernation, the Aughra chose another path. They would return to the Abyss and explore the new universe in spite of concerns over the Abyss' effects on their bodies with prolonged exposure. They did not believe peace could be made with the elder gods, and urged caution in regards to any plan that involved dealing with them. With the destruction of Dragonkin civilization following the activation of Kerapac's machine, the Aughra seemingly vanish entirely, waiting to be discovered.

Or have they?

As the thread title makes clear, I believe that we've already met a member of this caste. Not just met them, but fought and defeated them. Denizens of the Lorums, I urge you to recall an otherwise insignificant quest boss: the Prehistoric Abyssal.

The Prehistoric Abyssal features in the Heart of Stone quest, where it convinces Xenia to drain Gielinor's anima into the Abyss in order to starve the elder gods so that they'd never wake up. Sacrificing the few to save the many, a sentiment later to be echoed by a certain previously white, now blue Dragonkin.

Yet it's not just a matter of similar ways of thought (although that does reflect the Aughra's insistence that it was their minds that made them Dragonkin and not their bodies), but it's also the Prehistoric Abyssal's awareness of the elder gods in the first place. Life in this cycle evidently arose long after the elders went to sleep, so only those from previous cycles, those created by the elder gods, and those informed by either of the prior two (or by those who themselves were informed by the prior two) should be aware of elder gods existing let alone their presence on Gielinor. Yet the Prehistoric Abyssal knew.

It is for these reasons that I submit that the Prehistoric Abyssal is the modern form of at least one Aughra Dragonkin.

TLDR: The Prehistoric Abyssal is likely an Aughra Dragonkin as is it a denizen of the Abyss (where the Aughra sought to travel through and explore), it knew about the elder gods on Gielinor and that they consumed anima (a topic which most individuals shouldn't know at all without direct experience or exposure via somebody who has had direct experience, especially at the time Heart of Stone came out), and presented a plan to deal with the elder gods with a similar cost benefit analysis as Kerapac's (reflecting the Aughra's belief that it was their minds and not their flesh that made them Dragonkin).

Eh, the only part of it that resembles a Dragonkin at all is the feet. Xenia also describes it as centuries old, which seems like way too much of an understatement given that the Dragonkin are literally eons old.

While I'm not disputing the possibility, it seems more likely that the Prehistoric Abyssal is a Chthonian containing the essence of a Aughra. Given the power of the Dragonkin, I would assume it would have had to be either Hostilius or a direct spawn of his that ate the Aughra, absorbing its essence and memories, and then passed them on to its spawn.

Do remember that when the Aughra announced they'd be returning to the Abyss to explore the new universe, the other castes brought up concerns that long term exposure to the Abyss could have adverse effects on their bodies that they had been lucky to have avoided so far.

So we shouldn't expect the Aughra to look like Dragonkin anymore (though if the Aughra were right, we should expect them to still think like other Dragonkin).
