I want to discuss a potential option to be able to change the permanent/limited mode on your Ironman account. Now before I get started I want to state that I understand what permanent means and I shouldn't have did it if I knew I couldn't go back, but those were different times. Anyways, I think we should be given the option to change this status after a given amount of time or even once on an account. The reason I say this is because peoples life's change. For the most part its grown ass men that play this game and life can change in an instance. Getting Married, finding new employment, having kids etc. It would be nice to be given the option to change this for the people that lives have changed and still want to play this game casually without creating a fresh account. The stage I am in my life there's no way I'd be able to get back to where I am. I understand this option is a hacking defense for people or even for people that have no self control. But it would be nice to be able to change this wether it would be through a support ticket or what have you. All in all, do you think something like this would ever happen down the road or even be considered? Thank you and sorry for the story book. :)

I think this is a reasonable request and I think there are many others in similar situations. I spoke to a mod about this and they said to make a suggestion here so I will use your thread if you don't mind.

Here are some changes I recommend.

Firstly, if no changes will be made then at the very least I think the wording of the text needs to be made more clear. Here is the original text:

"As an
Iron Man
with a skill total of
1,000
, you may ask the Iron Man tutor in Lumbridge to make your Iron Man status
permanent
. This would prevent you from ever downgrading accidentally."

Personally I'm an Ultimate Ironman, maybe I'm stupid but to me this meant that while I knew I would be an Ironman forever (which I'm fine with) I thought I would still have the option to swap to a regular ironman, with "downgrading" referring to downgrading to a regular account. Amendments in
yellow
.

"As an
Ultimate
Iron Man
with a skill total of
1,000
, you may ask the Iron Man tutor in Lumbridge to make your
Ultimate
Iron Man status
permanent
. This would prevent you from ever downgrading
to a regular ironman or normal account
accidentally."

So at the very least make it perfectly clear.

But as OP has said, things change for people. This is a video game and not some signed blood contract with the devil. It's not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things if people wish to review their choice.

My suggestion would be for players to be able to review their permanent status every 365 days from the point of locking. This would be a fair compromise in my opinion and wont devalue the permanent status for those worried hackers will get their account.

----TL-DR-----

Give people option to review their choice every 365 days

Or at the very least change the wording.

Totally on board with reviewing it yearly, or at least one time. Didn’t realize my life would change as much as it did, I’m sure other people are in my situation who would love to play the game more casually but just don’t have the time to do all the side things required to be an iron. It’s almost like signing a contract because you’re just locked in and there’s nothing anybody can do which I think is absolutely wild.

Review yearly or even submitting a form to change the perm/limited status.

So from what I understand, the option was there before and customer support would do this for you. Then they stopped offering this service.

Hopefully they can review the policy again, or if they don't want to dedicate mod time to addressing these tickets (which probably happens a lot), simply add the option to review in game every year as suggested.

An alternative way could be to make it so when you ask to downgrade, instead of the usual 7 day waiting period it could be a month or more.

...What has getting married or finding employment have to do with ironman mode?

1. It specifically says you can permanently lock your game mode, and even asks for confirmation, it's not like your doing it without knowing.

2. You have always had the option not to lock your game mode permanently to iron.
Even in the case that your account gets hacked and they go to the ironman tutor and asks him to remove ironman mode on your account, it still takes 7 days before it comes into effect meaning you have plenty of time to stop it from happening.

Hell besides being hacked it's virtually impossible to change your account mode unless you don't bother reading what the ironman tutor says in lumbridge, confirm yes twice to changing your game mode and then wait 7 days without going back to him.

No support.

1. No one stated it was an unknown choice. What's the point you're trying to make here?

2. This isn't about having the option to choose to lock it, it's about allowing people to review their choice after the fact.

As Kryl stated, things change for people. Permanent didn't mean permanent (whether you like it or not). Here is the evidence for you:

https://twitter.com/JagexAsh/status/646780234394525698

A quick google search would inform any player that permanent status could be removed. So why allow people to do it, to then say no? Why is it still a functional request in customer support?

Why do you care if other players choose to remove their permanent status? It does not effect your game in any way.

I'm sure a lot of botters/RWTers would appreciate Jagex redefining what they mean by "Permanent."

Jokes aside, I think you overlook the fact that the status lock also acts as a preventative measure against the total destruction of an account in the event of a compromise. Imagine a sophisticated phish or database leak that results in hundreds/thousands of ironmen getting hacked and having their status disabled. Ironically, the way that Jagex Accounts are handled actually makes a lot of phishing scams look MORE convincing, because one of the biggest red flags used to be that these scams had to ask for your authenticator code, which the real RS website never did. Now, every login on the RS website asks for your code, so phishing scams actually look MORE real as a result.

So if you're asking me whether I should humor the person who got hacked, versus the person who just made a willful and knowledgeable decision they now regret? I mean, can you really blame me for having the opinion of "You knew what you were getting into when you did it" on this matter?

If you really want to stop being an Ironman, can I possibly suggest downgrading to an unranked Group Ironman? It basically still lets you trade whatever you want, just with extra steps/delays.
