Hear me out. Lets get a reward system in place for reporting bots. A point based system where first report of a verified bot account grants the reporter points. Any reports on accounts that aren't bots deducts points (to stop mass reporting to point farm). Points to be used for in-game ornament kits (non-tradeable). Not sure if this is a system that is possible or not but an idea i've had.

I feel like this would encourage false reporting. Since it's ok to report a suspected bot and your account won't get in trouble with it, there will be a swathe of silent players getting reported. Let's say they do action false reports, now you have accounts getting in trouble when they were just trying to earn a cosmetic.
Don't forget – RuneScape members get TWO free spins a day instead of the usual one!

Such a system will only fully expose the incompetency of the OSRS bot detection system and/or banning procedure, but not really add anything effectively to the actual solution.

If OSRS can't detect and/or ban bots for whatever reasons on their own, and they investigate further only based on players' accusations and ban some bots on individual basis manually, those bots can just recreate and OSRS still can't detect and/or ban them on their own.

The never-ending process of reporting, banning bots, and bot recreation won't add tangible result to OSRS's incredible botting problems, only that more players are encouraged to report and reap the rewards.

i think the purpose of this was to slow the bots down to try and minimize the impact they have on the osrs economy while a more advanced and permanent solution was found. If you ask me, they should just IP ban anyone using a bot. I realize VPNs are thing but for those not already using them, it makes things a little more difficult. This was also an attempt for community to help do something about the bot issue instead of just screaming about it all the time.

not if penalty for false report was to lose more points than what youd gain, or all points for that matter.

all of that extra effort giving out rewards and penalising bad reporting, could be used in dev time or combating bots the usual way.

so how is this better?

this would also encourage people to bot.

have their main report alts that they set up botting for rewards.

I agree that there could be a better use of dev time, however this is a bandaid solution. Obviously the issue of botting isnt really going anywhere so why not reach out to the community to assist?

Also if you think that people are gonna go through the effort of setting up bot farms just to get some untradeable cosmetics on their, youre out of your mind and don't understand why botting is botting. I'll concede that maybe 5% of botters are doing it for their own in game gains, but the other 95% are real world traders. There is no money in untradeable, easily obtained items.

if its better used elsewhere then you have just admitted this isnt a good idea.
the community do help they report already. thats all that is happening

if there is a reward system in place. thats just encouraging bad reporting. that is it.

you heavily underestimate the RS community

and if this comes into play, how many will start doing it for the rewards of reporting? more than 0%. just because the botting % is what it is now, doesnt mean it wont change when a reward system is in place.
i know why people bot. you are ignoring the fact a reward system adds another reason to bot.

so yes i understand why botting is botting. majority is for rwt, some for personal gain.

this will come under personal gain, as you stated. except it will be for a specific reward only obtainable one way. and people use alts to boosts everything if they can.

so yes 100% they will
