Having pvp content doesn't mean focusing on pvp content. They also clearly mentioned if there was pvp it would be opt-in only like the RS3 WIldy. Players who focused on pvp just opt-in.

"A community that does not exist" would be new players, if OSRS was very lucky to find them.

Its extremely unlikely that in a year a new community would be created, and jagex is not going to ignore the established community.

They will have to be very lucky to get new players for OSRS, but they will also be very stupid not trying.

Fact: if they were making this new "skill" just for the established community, they would have given us all kinds of details like they have done with all the other content and polls now.

They arent doing a good job of trying. A lot of people would want to try the game, then buy a bond with gps, but they would not want to spend 9 months earning the money for a 2 week bond.

IF they were making the new skill for people that have not found the game, how would they know what they want it to be?

They will have to add a lot of fresh closely related non-grindy content in a skill to make it palatable like an expansion similar to other still successful MMORPGs.

Unfortunately OSRS doesn't have any lore based progression, persistent game world kinds of typical MMORPG content to expand from. Regardless they focus the new skill on PVM or PVP, it won't give the MMORPG audience the feeling of an MMORPG.

Desperate times call for desperate measures though, if they don't try the boat will sink into the whirlpool or hit the rocks.

In other words, they have to destroy runescape to save it for the pvmers. Runescape is one of the most successful mmo in the world due to the fact that it has "grindy" skills. Until jagex decided to ruin the game for the tiny minority that does not like it, they had 3 MILLION active player accounts. Then they destroyed that and lost 7/8th of their player base. So they decided to recreate the time period that people loved, and got 500k back.

THEN they decided to once again destroy their player base by ruining the game for 90% of the players, and now you want them to completely ruin that by getting rid of the rest of the majority? The game was built on these "grindy" skills.

Runescape is very fine. Jagex makes RS3 very balanced for Pvmers and non-pvmers.. They just can't find non-pvm players or OSRS because such players usually don't grind long hours and they don't like gamemodes.

They can not find non pvmers because they have destroyed the non pvmers economy. You arent going to have players if they can not succeed and jagex has made it impossible to do so. That leaves only combat players to enjoy the new skill.

Rs3 might be welcoming to non pvpers, but jmods in this game made sure that we all know that non pvmer/pvpers are not welcome.

Sailing is a vaporware. It is intended to not have a focus on specific content. OSRS is trying to get new players to give them money to back this project and guide the design of content.

Those who aren't familiar with kickstarter projects perhaps can see a thing or two from Jagex's kickstarter board game with Steamforged games. Originally, the design of the board game was all old school newbie quests up to just Dragon Slayer. However, when backers came with over $1 million real money, they swiftly added content way beyond Dragon Slayer. They already have Summoning and Steel Titan, Kalphite Queen and the RS3 Zuk with his big sword added so far already. It is just natural selection. They think modern content sell.

It is the same business concept with OSRS's first new skill, so don't just think it is focused on pvp or pvm, for even if it is focused on one of them now, it probably will be very different when it is released.
