As many have alluded to, it's just the nature of change. New platforms on social media pop up making forums more niche. However, I still don't think forums have no use

Even when you look across the rest of the internet, forums still exist as niche communities for basically anything you can think of. Car maintenance, DIY topics etc.

As much as the forums here on RS can be very ranty without a whole lot of constructive feedback, I'd wager it's still a lot more collaborative than social media is.

As long as we strive for that as a community then we can keep the forums as a niche but collaborative space to discuss the game. :)

A forum is an invention of the early 2000s where "social media" did not exist. However, I remember being here in 2006-2013 and the forums would have hundreds maybe even thousands of people online.

you pretty much answered why its gone the way it has.

twitter

reddit

taken over and its easier to communicate with the community on those platforms.

the ones that are left, just dont want it to die completely haha

+1 to this.

I’d also like to add Discord.

Due to it’s features (i.e. servers and voice chat), as well as accessibility I think it’s super popular for a lot of modern gamers. I have even noticed J-Mods are active frequently on there.

The main reason was accessibility . In prior times, Jagex Moderators could not log in to their J-Mod accounts outside of Jagex's HQ, for security purposes. This was relaxed a bit during the COVID-19 pandemic to allow them to work from work and keep the game continuously updated and looked after.

However, J-Mods could only post on the Forums while being at Jagex's HQ. With Social Media taking over everything, literary, J-Mods started to focus on reaching out to the community while being out of work. This became a trend and then the norm, as we see lately. Jagex noticed that they were able to reach a wider audience within Social Media as the Forums were limited to a mere couple of thousands players at their peak and Golden Age. With Social Media, you have the potential to reach millions of people.

With that being said, Reddit, X (formerly known as Twitter), Discord, YouTube, etc. permitted Jagex to engage with more people and eventually players. Another main point was the strict rules that the Forums had in prior times. Social Media allow players to express themselves freely, something that wasn't really possible in the Forums' Golden Age era where the Code of Conduct wasn't as relaxed as it is now. It's was so strict that you couldn't even mention any of the Social Media websites that have been aforementioned in this thread.

Wrong, everyone that has runescape account has access to the forums. Not everyone has twitter/discord/reddit/etc accounts. Which means if you want to communicate with jagex staff now you have to make an external account, previously you did not have to. how is that more accessible ????

really? i got banned from communist/woke/leftist/libtard /r/2007scape for making a comment with 'odablock' on it, the censorship there is more rampant than in russia during soviet union ages.

The real reason why jagex is using other means of communicating is because they're bad as hell. Apple does not let the PR escape their control, but noobs at jagex, including the super duper bad current CEO think they will follow the trend of 'hey everyones on twitter'.

No, 8/10 people i know don't use social media no more and hate it. Another reason why the game is constantly bleeding players. But hey, expect the expected, in the words of Steve Jobs: these guys are bozos, they're B' players and hate A' players because they cant keep up.

btw OSOSRS when ? non-woke this time pls, i dont want wokeism in the game i play thnx

I was referring specifically to Jagex Moderators being able to engage with the community outside of Jagex's HQ, without having to use their Jagex Moderator accounts.
