Chameleon extract

As a male i changed the skin colour with the "chameleon extract" then changed the gender into female and still had the changed skin-colour, but when i tryed to change the gender back into male again, the skin changed back to normal. The colour disappeared.
is this how its supposed to be?
if yes, why didnt it changed on the first try?
if no, how do i get it back?
