Before people freak out that the Chinese are buying Jagex, you should know that Riot (league of legends) is totally owned by a Chinese company too. And they are doing great.
The difference is Tencent already owns other companies in that field. The company wanting to buy Jagex is a mining company.
*Literally* a mining company. Iron ore and mining.

They are trying to expand their own brand.

They have cash, Jagex has "plans".

You are right, this marriage doesn't seem to mesh too well.
You never know, but ...

Then they have even more motivation to leave the game the way it is and not try to bring in major changes since they lack the experience in this field.

I'm not too surprised something like this has happened. All venture capitalists do the same thing - Buy something that looks like it's going to be worth more money in the future, bleed it dry like a parasite, and then sell it off before the value drops away.

Not that I'm really bothered any more. As you can probably see (or will in a month's time at least), there is no member's badge by my name. I've been a continuous member since the first few months of RS2, but I can't be bothered any more. I've seen a game with a truly innovative and interesting plot, mechanics that meant you could literally do anything with a single character that any other player could (no classes like all other RPGs) and most of all ETHICS (Pay your membership and everyone is equal)...

To a game where every month is filled with pay-to-win gambling promotions and at least 1 update a month that requires a month of constant grind to complete even if you're maxed out.

Playing this game has become a burden, and the more the player base has dwindled, the more they squeezed the MTX to wring money out of the remainder. I gave them a year to reclaim the spirit of the game. They promised in their manifesto to tone down the MTX, but like politicians after an election they reneged on their promises and pushed MTX even more.

Well sorry guys but the remainder is now a little smaller; I'm officially giving up on something that my heart left long ago. I've got plenty of stuff in my Steam library to keep me busy. For your sake I hope things don't go catastrophically wrong.
The Empty Lord is a figment of the imagination of gullible people who started worshipping the purple Elder Bathrobe. The name and symbol comes from the washing label: Za-ros means "Do not dry clean".

Most of what is on this thread is incoherent idiocy and speculation.

Numerous points I want to make.
1. an INVESTMENT company looks towards companies doing well and seeks to enjoy the profit by investing into the future of the game/long term stability. You can't tell me a company spends £300m buying a company that certainly doesn't have £300m of physical assets isn't interested in seeing a return on that purchase. They want to make the game successful, how, remains to be seen. Considering the nature of the company involved, it's background, they aren't one involved in the games industry and will more than likely let Jagex do it's thing.

2. Pointless comments over Goldfarming/MTX worries and IVP ruining everything. Be realistic, MMOs faced a large downward trends (all MMOs) leading up to RuneScape introduction of MTX. Without these alternative money sources, the game could've died and been gone and no one really wants that, still plenty of us left playing and it was always optional, never forced upon players.

3. What does it mean for us, the players? More than likely, very little, maybe even a positive future. Jagex and RuneScape has been through a lot and been around for a great number of years now enjoying pretty decent success at the forefront of the MMO market. Nothing to worry about guys.

4. Wait for more information before making decisions to quit? I don't really understand why you'd quit anyway, there is no logical reasoning behind it.
Probably not going as fast as the name suggests.
I relish a challenge.

great, chinese are known for their pay2win games. expect experience to be buyable at the solomon's store folks

Experience is already 100% buyable between TH and bonds... what difference would there be?

There are games out there though that make it a neccessity to even train something.

Or they'll ruin the game.

It's a company quickly diversifying in an attempt to prevent bankruptcy because their main business area has failed.

What cash?
Sip Yep, RuneScape was a good game.

Ooo :)

Please pass my good luck wishes to people who are providing transaction advisory and due diligence services :)

Like any other project, should be very interesting to work on.

And good luck with negotiations, hope everything goes smoothly.

Edit: P.S. Quite strange that public is made aware of on-going negotiations :o Unless, everything is more or less finalized now.
