Runescape has one huge problem which Jagex is blind to recognizing. I will elaborate.
I have started playing this game in the classic era some 9 years 3 months ago. I have never paid for membership, not because I didn't have money, but simply because as I began to enjoy the game and create a clique of good friends, Runescape would make a hugely unnecessary update which forced many of my friends to quit.
Days will go by and my friends list would be dead. Not a soul to enjoy this "multiplayer" game with. Life would go on as usual. School, friends, family, work, enjoyment. I would completely forget about the game for months at a time. When I came back it would be the same deal again. I would make new trustworthy friends from all around the world. Then a new ridiculous update would show up and in a matter of days or weeks, friends would leave. Some would complain, either to me or on the forums, but at the end of the day there would be little or no satisfaction in playing.
Now, it has been almost 10 years since I left tutorial island and wrongfully confused the Rune Two Hander for a Lightsaber. Wrongfully confused the sleeping bag CAPTCHA with people using colored text. 10 years since a school mate showed me the "Wildy". 10 years since I owned a mask set and santa hat. 10 years since Jagex did anything to create a friendly community. 10 years since Jagex focused on anything other than the bottom line. And this is the main problem of Runescape. Jagex' focus on the bottom line forced away many of the people who made the game into a success.
The people who built a respectable community were shunned by the same people who they financially supported for a very long time. So, Jagex, I know the bottom line is important, but when the bottom line is based on a shaky foundation of greediness, it will certainly not last for very long.
