As long as this is commercially viable, I see no problem with it. I would hate to see this be set up due to players rushing to vote to experience the 'glory days' only to lose interest after a few months.
I hope there is a huge margin of safety built into the budgeted expenses. Nothing would be more disheartening to players than to see this project launched, only to be scaled back in six months due to lack of funds.
As a side note, the current game is my favorite by far. I think those that are wanting old servers are looking through rose-tinted nostalgia glasses. If this project is viable, however, I think it'd be cool for those that want this to actually get this.

I agree partly. The player-base has no idea, on average, what it wants. This project is supported mainly through nostalgia. If you read, however, it says that the increased membership fees would be to those that want access to this project.
