How many spaces do you put after a period?
When using a monospaced font, where everything is the same width, it makes sense to type two spaces after a period at the end of a sentence to create a visual break. For that reason, people who learned to type on a typewriter were taught to put two spaces after a period at the end of a sentence.

What does permanent press mean on a washing machine?
The Permanent Press Cycle uses the normal speed spin and has 45 seconds of cool water sprayed on clothes at the end of the cycle. This lower agitation speed and cool water is supposed to prevent wrinkles in clothing like cotton fabric that is prone to wrinkling.

What Colour were carrots originally?
Originally, purple carrots were the norm, but there were some offshoots. Yellow and white ones appeared in the wild. Over time, 17th-century Dutch carrot growers managed to cultivate these yellow and white ones carrots into the orange ones we're familiar with today.

How did horseradish get its name?
In German, it's called “meerrettich” (sea radish) because it grows by the sea. Many believe the English mispronounced the German word “meer” and began calling it “mareradish.” Eventually it became known as horseradish. The word “horse” (as applied in “horseradish”) is believed to denote large size and coarseness.

How hot is the water in a shower?
The Department of Energy recommends having your tank-based hot water heater set to 120 degrees Fahrenheit for most people, but if you've never adjusted the temperature on your hot water heater, it's probably set to 140 degrees, which is the default setting from most manufacturers.
