Pi

This is the number which has plagued all of us since school. It is best known as the number which defines the relationship between the circumference and diameter of a circle (C = Pi D). It is so named after the first letter of the Greek words for periphery or perimeter.

However, as strange as it may seem, Pi also appears in a vast number of fields, particularly in cosmology and quantum physics, neither of which appear to have any ties to circles.

Yet, for all of its importance, Pi is more memorable for being a non-terminating, non-repeating decimal, as well as being a transcendental number. Advances in technology during the last century have allowed Pi to be calculated to about 1.2 trillion decimal places, thanks to computers.

Mathematicians and other fans of Pi alike have devoted considerable time and effort to memorising the digits following the decimal place, even deep into the tens of thousands! But for those of us here, a less ambitious limerick should suffice;

The ratio C over D
When they're parts of a circle, it's three
Point one four one five
Eight nine seven nine three two three!

Remember not to forget your next Pi Day on March 14th (which read by American date systems is 3/14), and be sure to tuck in to a slice of pie!
