(continued from previous post)
We have clanmates with Asberger’s Syndrome, we have clanmates with learning problems, we have clanmates who struggle to talk well to people and sometimes fail. We have clanmates who are adolescing and finding their way among their first group of adults.
Talking takes practice, and if you don’t know what it feels like to embarrass yourself in public ... you haven’t lived my life, for sure.
We have ageing clanmates. We have educated professionals. We have people who make puns wonderfully, and beloved clanmates who couldn’t catch a pun if you tied in a sack and threw it to them; sounds like family to me. We have people who have no other families.
We have clanmates whose real life relatives are dying, or need enormous levels of care – from our clanmates. We have clanmates facing divorce, and we have clanmates celebrating new babies.
We have lost clanmates to wonderful, time-consuming careers, and we have "bon voyaged” clanmates on to clans with other focuses, and we have lost clanmates to death.
So I am asking you to chat. And I am asking you to listen. And if you need to, I am asking you to pm, because sometimes chat flows and sometimes it struggles. All families, communities, and civilizations go through that. But what I am really asking you to do is imagine sometimes what life story might be hidden behind the chat – and keep your clanmates safe and on track and on chat. You can never know some of the things that make them so valuable … and some of them are valuable to other people in ways you will never know.
I’m in there somewhere. I need our clanmates. Thank you for taking care of them for me.
