Several reasons
1. Death costs
2. Dumb mechanics
3. Constantly nerfing gear and weapons
4. Every other piece of content takes a year to complete meaning you almost never have time for combat anyways
5. Hour long precursors like at Zuk or the Elite Dungeons
After getting a Billion GP drop from a dye and spending hundreds of dollars on bonds I thought, oh hey, I could buy everything I ever wanted now, Haaaaaaaaaaahahahaahhahaha, then you realize almost immediately, holy shit, it's going to cost me over 20b to get everything I ever wanted if not more, and all that excitement and joy just goes away, and every time you get a big drop after that moment is a disappointment knowing you're 20 more off your end goal despite already grinding 10-20 years of your life, you know how long it took me to get my first Billion GP? It took me my entire childhood life, and a good portion of my adult life on this game to get my first Billion GP drop, how am I suppose to earn 20 more of those before I die?
The problem with these games is that they purposely make the grind so long you just want to throw money at it to make it better, then the Devs use and try to hide behind the MMORPG Genre in hopes to defend their absurd grind/intentions, granted some of the content you cannot simply buy, you have to grind it however this content is far and few between and is often worse than the armor you can outright buy, however with bossing in general, you can buy your way to the top and destroy bosses with ease, that should urk a lot of people, you should be able to earn each item in game within a reasonable amount of time, again, 20 years of my life on this game, and I still have 20B minimal just to get all my upgrades, that doesn't even include armor and gear, one bow and one staff come up to a total combined price of 8 Billion GP, it took me 20 years to get 1 Billion GP, you figure it out.
