To this day I have not hunted for any of the skill pets and have simply stumbled across all of the ones that I've earned so far. It probably wouldn't mean that much to me until I hit 200m in a skill without the pet.

However, I do agree with leaving it RNG-based even if you've hit 200m. There is already a mitigation factor that improves your chance of getting the pet at 200m xp.
