When logging into the forums, are IDs that use * a security risk? Does it matter if the current forum ID has * in it? Or should I be fine? Because every time I get a * in my login ID, I logout and log back in until I get one without a star. Anyone know?
Are you referring to your session ID? I'm unaware of any forum ID's containing anything other than a numerical value.
Assuming you are referring to the session ID, the value of yours should not present any security risk to you provided you don't share it. There used to be a bug that would allow someone else to log into your session if you shared your session ID and to the best of my knowledge, that has been fixed though not sharing it remains a best-practice. For instance, if you want to link to another thread or post, it is best to use the QFC and [qfc id=][/qfc] tags to do so.

Food scientists have finally managed to remove the mint flavor from gum! The ex-spearmint was a success!
Yea, Spearmint30 is correct. There used to be a bug that permitted someone to log into your account if that specific session ID was intentionally or unintentionally shared. This is not the case anymore; however, even if someone does share it by mistake or not, these are most of the time hidden by the Forum Moderators to avoid possible issues and to simply protect that piece of information.
To answer your specific question, I do not think that it matters. I wholeheartedly believe that this question may be best answered by Mod Lyon and/or Hmm. They are extremely knowledgeable when it comes to these concerns
.
Nothing is ever 100% secure, however there is no reason to believe a "*" character has any security risk in relation to your session IDs over a "g" character.
If there is anything discovered, as always please do get in touch.
