Okay, here is some contribution to get the thread started, feel free to use this information on the first page if you think this is what you're looking for (and thanks in advance for crediting me):
1. The general classification of headgear.
When head-slot items are considered in the context of Forum avatars, they can be divided into two distinct groups: open-face headgear and hidden-face headgear.
First category contains various variations of wizard-type hats, hoods, medium helmets (and some other open-face helmets), coifs, various accessories (for example nose peg, fake beak), and many other.
The second category contains various variations of full helmets, masks, and many other.
A Forum avatar without any head-slot item equipped would be a third distinct group of avatar types. It is often done to put an emphasis on character's hairstyle.
2. Various tips and tricks:
* The photobooth to take your avatar picture in is located in-game near the Make-over mage (west of Falador).
* You can't take a picture of yourself wearing/wielding borrowed items.
* You can take a photo there once every 2 hours.
* The avatars are a members-only feature.
* A photobooth can be constructed while Dungeoneering: you can replace the portal in the starting room of a dungeon. This allows you to take a picture with some Dungeoneering-specific items equipped.
* You can use double eyepatches to imitate a look of dark glasses.
* To achieve an unusual look of some head-slot items, you can get them enchanted by Pikkupstix in Taverley and store some summoning scrolls in the item. This will change its colors slightly.
* The gaze effects will not show on Forum avatars.
* To avoid some avatar glitches like the bottom of the image being cut off, take a picture on the day a system update happens, in the hours after the update.
I'll post more later.

While it doesn't entirely apply to forums, a lot of players have trouble with the full body picture captured for the Adventurer's log. Most times your game avatar turns shy, and only shows from the waist up in the "full body" shot.
Not many know that a good remedy for fixing this is to take your picture within 30-60 minutes of an update passing. This, for unknown reasons, causes the full body picture to behave normally.
