You could also use a medium preview image before loading the iframe contents where data is a concern in much the same way that current posted images are only loaded on reveal.
http://img.youtube.com/vi/P8K2qO0zVsM/mqdefault.jpg
(Which is a 15.6KB jpeg file - so typically <20KB, whereas the iframe contents in this same video is 626KB without video playback - or a ~97% reduction)
Also worth mentioning that, because these are under Google/YouTube's CDNs, they have proper caching set up.
Using "controls=0" does load the flash player before the video is initiated, whereas "controls=2" doesn't load the flash player until the user initiates the playback (but "controls=2" will enable the user controls at the bottom which may present a slightly larger risk due to linking if annotations are turned on in the controls), however your suggestion would be a perfect solution should data usage be a concern to the end users.
I actually based the data usage off the HTML5 player, and using Chrome's dev tools for usage numbers. The flash would likely have a higher overhead still.
Ah, I see. I'm just going by what is listed in the dev guides. I'm not sure how it decides which player to use (html5 or as3), but it should automatically use the appropriate player based on what your browser supports.
But, either way, a placeholder image would probably be the best way to go (as is done with the imgur embeds) as you have suggested. No point in having the player loaded at all until a user decides that they actually want to view the video.

I agree with lazy loading as well
Can I turn in a paper without citing all sources?

It's a nice idea and pretty straight forward however clustering up the forum with every piece of BB code under the sun is probably not the best use of development time.
Adding imgur was great and had some very useful applications and I can imagine there are a fair few to adding videos. Not really my call either way as it would need to go through the CM team to decide if they really want it.
There is not really a technical reason why we could not do it as we would follow a similar approach as we did for imgur.

I wouldn't consider updating the forums to a better standard to be "clustering up the forum". Many internet boards have a plethora of BB codes at their disposal, and I think the more the forums have to offer the more appealing they will be.

Thanks for taking the time to address this Allstar. It's always appreciated.
So, it's technically possible, fairly straightforward to develop, and it would be useful.
Now all we need to do is convince the CM team that it's worth the effort.
How many votes would we need to get this passed?

Nexus, I'm basically neutral with the proposal. I'll choose not to moderate video postings, similar how I inhibit from moderating pictures these days. For what its worth, Jagex have to spend a lot of time and labour re-engineering this old forum software just to add new feature -- a feature that has potential to break current features. That is why I am very vocal for scrapping this old forum software in favor of a newer one either in-house coded or opensource to bring RSOF to the 21st century quality it truly deserves.

I agree, I personally don't want you guys to re-engineer this old forum software ad-infinitum everytime a new feature is deemed needed. The only way I believe to move-forward here in RSOF is to have a new software to run it.
