hi guys. so, i know that. those advertising sites on GE are not safe. but i wanted to take the bait to see if i get lucky. i saw one adversiting to go check youtube for a few-lettered name&numbers (like [Edited] for example,) for a couple of 100k.

being that it says go on youtube, i decided to check it since nothing bad could happen to my account through youtube lol. so i search and it leads to a few-hours fresh video and the description has a bit.ly link. it says to visit the link. i am a little suspisous, so i do what i can to be safe about it but idrk what to do other that open in private window

it leads to a runescape forum site, and im thinking hm, ok legit enough. guy made a thread and it says hes beein playing for years but getting too old and just simply wants ot give back to community, asks for ppl to comment their levels and meet him in a sepcific world.

understandable, and also there is a moderator who says giveaway approved (Mod Sarnie) so i give.

i try to comment as a guest but it doesnt let me, it asks me to log in. hmmm.. fine i gguueessss, since the site is coming off as legit to me. i sign in, THEN IT ASKS ME FOR BANK PIN. ok, red flag, you dont need to know my pin. so i go into my game and delete pin at the moment and select the "dont have a pin" option. then next page it asks me to input the Authenticator. hmm, feels legit again i suppose.. so i type my code and then site fails and it says server error.

i repeat this another time and then realize the url might be, a little odd? idk if it'' let me post links plainly here but it's sorta like, [Edited]

realized the odd addition there at the end of the .com and yeah, whole thing feels fishy again. i added a new bank pin onto my account and change password but this one was pretty sneaky since it really looks like the site, i wouldnt be able to tell

Never, trust me,
never
follow links to giveaways. It's almost impossible for it to be legit.. :|

Fake stories of quitting is a sign of scams.
Link shorteners is a sign of scams.
Offsite giveaways is a sign of scams.
Foreign site domain is a sign of scams.
Lots to keep in mind! Listen to your gut feelings my friend. Better safe than sorry!

It's true the site will ask you to log in as it collects your login name and login password. Possibly your email too if it's an email login and email hasn't been changed since. So be careful with any incoming emails you receive the coming days!

It also asks for auth code which it collects and will attempt to sign in to your account immediately after. The site administrator will get access to your IP address and device information.

Here's some guides that should help prevent this and also keep yourself secure :)

People advertising social media sites in the GE, promising you free gp for posting, and that have a link claiming to be to the RS Forums, are actually leading you to a phishing site. Those people are not really giving away gp. They are trying to steal your account details.

Do not follow links that you have been given by others to access the RuneScape site. Instead type the address yourself, or use browser bookmarks that you have set yourself.

If someone is pressuring and/or bribing you to visit any website, even a YouTube or Facebook page, it's best to report them for advertising a website and then add them to your ignore list. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

it asking for the authenticator is what threw me off, and that it lead to the runescape forums here, with the Mod Sarnie approval, obviously seemed legit to someone dumb like me. idk who mod sarnie is or how to view actual moderators? and it being on a forum just seemed that it would be a sorta, legit? way to do a giveaway, if they so wanted to do one.

This really is a perfect example of a Phishing Scam. All the details necessary to educate people on how the scam is performed, without any of the risks of following malicious links.

If only there was a way to educate the general population of players so they would stop falling prey to this ancient scam.

ok. any ideas?

Hello Nic0w0, there is no 'lucky' nor 'dumb' it is simple curiousity about something that is 'digital' thus difficult to understand how it will enfold once you are getting into troubles.

The real world, it is easier to detect these kind of problems, learned about it as a little kid that something like this can happen and advised well enough by others during your education/growing-up how to deal with it.

The digital world has not such a thing. You go on The Internet and 'whammm' you have to deal with it whether you have knowledge or not.

Curiousity is a dangerous thing, you need a lot of knowledge and self-control to deal with it.
Even simple awareness isn't enough because they are aware of you.

I do not know for sure but as far as I have followed your story, you have lost this account for ever, even if you still have a feeling that you are in control, you are not in control anymore.
Your account is hijacked - phished - scammed and your digital identity 'might' be compromised.

The future will tell in how deep troubles you are. :(
