The Community section of the new This Week In Runescape includes a picture of a wonderful piece of cosplaying prop work by a fan...

Or does it?

On looking at the creator's Instagram account (@anaelic_), it turns out that she didn't just decide to up and make Thok's Stick... rather, she was commissioned to do it for RuneScape (her first ever commission, she tells us). And she correctly labels her Instagram posts as ads.

It is EXTREMELY disingenuous and ethically questionable for Jagex to present this on the home page, in the Community tab, with the implication that this was just something which came out of the community, when in fact Jagex ordered and paid for it. Heck, there's no guarantee that the creator's even an RS player, since she refers to the quest as an "expansion", which in my experience actual players do not.

Impressed by the work; very unimpressed with the presentation.

As you rightly say this was a commission, though it still came from a member of the community (whether you believe that or not), hence its position in this week's newspost.

The newspost was in no way written to be dishonest or misleading. "A cosplayer created Thok's stick and here's how you can make your own." The artist correctly indicated that her work was done on commision which is important to the integrity of her work. We shared that work as we would have done anyone's, paid for or not.

We're proud that we get to work with such talented individuals who use all kinds of media. We also love being able to support them, especially during the difficult times facing us all right now. This was no exception, so of course we'd want to showcase the amazing work done by Amber in front of as many people as possible. It's good for her community and it allows as many people as possible from our own to have a crack at making this piece for themselves.

With your concerns addressed, I will now be closing this thread.
