I'm going to say what I always say on this topic:
The type of game Runescape was changed. That's all there is to it. Runescape was a highly casual game (click-n-wait combat, most skilling was low intensity - not to mention that the end goal was 13m exp, not 102m, let alone 200m - or was designed to reward players for their effort, low end graphics that even your grandmother's computer could run, etc etc etc). Now we have the Runscape of today: twitchy, reaction-based combat with ability bar systems with a strong focus on high level PvM, level 99 is ENTRY level to a lot of communities in the game, rather than end game, due to the ever increasing ways to get exp (yet, the differences are only matters of 25%-50% over the course of years, with a few exceptions), and all of these events, promotions, dailies, and constant garbage that "punishes" players for not playing every single day.
Jagex drove away their casual community, their "vision" for Runescape's future did not include them. And all that left was the really hardcore people. The No Exp Wasters. The "I play 15 hours per day, and I don't have a problem" people. The PvM elitists. You can't survive in the Runescape of today as a member of Runescape's community from 5, 6, 7+ years ago. They are, simply, completely different beasts.
Edit: Oh, perfect! (Still don't know how to quote properly - lol). This pretty much sums up what I feel/miss about RS currently. That and I have no idea what I'm doing anymore (blame that on laziness). Just the other day, I was training Slayer (had Waterfiends) with a Chaotic maul, fury, blah blah blah (old school gear). Lol.
