Yeah I get that, I mostly played before there was even an OSRS/RS3 split so
assumed
(e'rrybody knows that that means) that they actually showed the player counts for each game.
It's sketchy, and the excuse would most likely be to not show such a low player count of one game over another to make it seem like more people play.
However, RS3 has too much complicated/spam out the ass on your screen everywhere that turns most people away from P2W games after a brief "shiny and new" period, whilst OSRS is rampant with bots in all of the new player areas.
Sure individually they don't last very long, but when I came back and attempted to add some new players from another mobile game (the reason I even came back, seent OSRS on mobile), just the sight of the bots turned them all away; even after explaining most are banned within 24 hours.
There's not really anything that mingles the old and new players together; new players only get low level bots to interact with and that's ofc discouraging so they quit after a while.
Rs3 isn't any better with it's constant P2W spam. Now of course I've been gone a while, it's been at least 6 years since I played regularly. This is just what I'm seeing as an older returning player, and one that went into the newbie area of OSRS mobile with a buncha newbies that were just completely turned off even though they admitted it's far better than the game we had previously played.
I stayed for the M&S rework and have gotten back into it, plus this game even as flawed as it is (what game isn't?) was leagues better than the previous one. And that's saying something.
