Have you ever thought about it?
Like almost all singaporeans i know have the family name "Nguyen." Every romanian person i know has their family name ending with "escu" . 90% of male brazilian people i know have the name "Joao" .

Do you know more enigmas like that? Have you ever experienced it or thought about it? Do you eventually know where the origin comes from, that in specific areas an extremly huge amount of people share the same name?

In Denmark and Norway family names typically end with -sen and in Sweden -son.

It's derived from the word "son" and the system is still in use in Iceland where boys get a name ending with -son and girls get a name ending with -dottier (daughter).

So a man named Hakon Svensson has a son and a daughter, the son could then be named Jon Hakonsson and the daughter Freya Hakonsdottier. So the family name only ties children to their father and most likely changes with every generation of the family.

In Denmark, Norway and Sweden they stopped that trend and last names became family names. Women got their husband's name and their daughters got the same last name as their brothers.
Darkness rises when silence dies.
