Hey all :)

I currently have two 21.5" monitors - nothing special specs-wise, but I'm not really too picky about having top-of-the-line specs for monitors. I bought each of them at different times, though, so they're not both from the same brand and it's very easy to tell color-wise and all that.

I've been thinking of upgrading to a new set so that I can have the two be consistent and actually identical, and also because I'm tempted to get 27"s.

I'm wondering what size monitors some of you all use and/or if the brand differences seems like a bad excuse for me to want to upgrade to a new set haha.

your graphics card plays a very important role in what kind of monitor you should go for. Personally i find gaming monitors the best choice. 120-144hz makes a world of diffrence when gaming, but you need a graphics card capable of rendering your game at 120-144 fps. Gaming monitors come in both 24 and 27 inches

Hmm yeah, I know my graphics card would be able to handle two 27" mid-range similar to how I have now, but I'm not 100% sure about the higher-specs options (I'd have to check I suppose).

I got 2 of these, I like the flexibility and feel 24" is perfect for games.

The Asus VG248QE shown in the link is a great gaming monitor, I use Benq XL2420's myself. However, both of these monitors use TN panels to achieve thier high refresh rates of 120-144hz. If your graphic card cant take advantage of these monitors high refresh rates ingame, then your better off getting a 60hz IPS panel monitor. IPS panels are much better than TN panels in visual/colour quality making them ideal for watching movies but they mostly run at a choppy 60hz. most people don't mind playing games at 60hz/60fps, but those of us who are used to much higher refresh rates have a very hard time downgrading. Its a matter of Smoothness vs image quality.

Seeing as there is no SLI support in NXT, my GTX titan was only able to render the game at 100 fps in busy areas using ultra settings,1080P resolution. The developers also mentioned in a stream that the performance wont be significantly better on release, but we might see improvement in the months to come. If you own an Nvidia GTX 780ti,970,980,980ti or any of the titan cards, you should be able to get away with using the full potential of a gaming monitor in NXT. AMD cards don't mix well with gaming monitors, as you cant activate the higher refresh rates or 3d effects of the monitor. The max refresh rate I was able to achieve was 120hz when I last used an AMD card.

My opinion might be biased, as I've always looked to ASUS first when looking for upgrades. Just old habits more than anything else. (Got the Asus Xonar Essence STX 2 for sound - (I definitely recommend one of these if you're looking to upgrade and haven't got a soundcard yet. Only complaint is the mic in-line is too low, which doesn't make any difference to me, as my preamp goes though a USB port.) , aswell as GTX 970 from Asus.)

Haven't fiddled with any 3D effects yet, so I might have overpaid for a feature I dont use. Their next step up, if you're looking for a 27", is the VG278 I think, which caps at 120 Hz for twice the price of the 24".
I personally find the 24" very pleasant for the eye after a bit of tinkering and installing f.lux.
Remember DVI cables, HDMI usually caps at 60 Hz.

If your monitor supports 3D then you will get 60Hz in 3D mode or 120-144hz in 2D mode. you didn't overpay as you are still benefiting from the high 2D refresh rate.
