Also the away goals rule was made so that the team away from home would be encouraged to play more offensive instead of parking the bus and trying for a 0-0 so they can win the game at home in the 2nd leg.

Same reason the the league changed the system to 3 points for a win from 2 points. Teams playing away would try for a 0-0 because a win wasn't as valuable in terms of points so they changed it to 3 points for a win to encourage the away team to go for more wins instead of draws.

A lot of the rules are there to make the game more enjoyable to play and watch.

Away goals just seems a bit arbitrary to me. If the aggregate ends in a tie after the second 90, then having extra time in the "better" teams home stadium should be reward enough imo.

What if the second game is played in the "lesser" teams stadium? Should they play a 3rd leg then? Also, UEFA can't go out and say that one team is better than the other. Imagine a semifinal between Barcelona and Real Madrid and it ends 2-2 on aggregate. Who should decide who's the better team? UEFA certainly can't say it.

WELL... I was mostly referring to the American playoff system for determining a champion. Since the "better" team is the one that won more points through the season in league play.

Its obviously a lot trickier for European matches because theres no end of the year tournaments to determine the league champion. I still don't like it being the tie breaker, but I really don't have any better ideas.

Champions league is the play-off for all leagues on the continent to determine who's the best. (Sort of :p )

Yeah Im aware, I *sorta* follow EPL and UEFA, but obviously in UEFA its unfair to use the league tables to determine the better team because the leagues aren't always equal :P . So I understand the away goal tie breaker making more sense in that scenario. However in MLS the teams play each other all season to determine who gets to play one another in the tournament at the end to determine the champion, so I think it makes more sense to use the season results to determine the better team, but MLS still uses the standard away goals and it kinda sucks :c.
