You're right, its a big gear grinder for me also. The same goes for their there and they're, to and too, then and than, affect and effect, altar and alter, etc.

Tbh they could just do away with you're and make the contraction of 'you are' your. I think if someone says "your playing runescape" its pretty obvious they mean 'you are'.

Still they don't realize that all you're means is you are. It's kind of ironic and funny when somebody in RS tries to tell you 'your stupid' lol.

I know that's what they mean, but that doesn't mean they know the differences.

They don't really need to know the difference though really, the context of the sentence should always be enough, thats why I think they might as well just make the contraction for you are your. And while im at it I dont see the need for the apostrophes in contractions people know dont is only a word if its in the form of a contraction so any time you see dont you know its do not.

I don't use the apostrophes much in RS, but I do use proper yours and you'res, there their and they're, etc. I've seen it at a professional level and in college where people just don't know the differences. That's where it'll really hurt them, is in a professional setting. Wouldn't be good to hand in a paper to your boss or professor with all yours and no you'res.

EDIT: It also grinds my gears that some think too is just an exaggeration for to, which it isn't.
