I think they traded him mostly because he wasn't a good fit for the team. They got away from who they are as a team to run all these plays specificially for Harvin, and it wasn't working. It was hindering them more than helping at this point. They were more successful last year without him than they were with him this year. Also, trading his huge contract frees up money for other players like Russell Wilson, Cliff Avril, Bobby Wagner, KJ Wright, etc.
As a Seahawks fan, I was shocked and disappointed when I heard the news of this trade. After pondering it for a while however, I think it does make sense and I am okay with it. The Seahawks need to get back to what made them successful last year, being a ground and pound team with the running game first, and the play action passing second.
