It's about a critique on Russia during the early-1900s to the late-1900s. It is cleverly written to disguise the criticism and unrest of the Russian government of that time.

It takes place in the apparently desolate future--3K years, I believe. These "people" in the One State (their "location&quot ;) are building a ship to traverse the solar system and, possibly, distant locations in search of new life. Assuming that there are distant locations, the One State's goal is to take over those areas. And, of course, One State has total control over its people.

The story is told via "journal" entries by a man named D-503, who, throughout the entries, documents the daily lives of the people and the progress of the ship. Ultimately, throughout the entries, D-503 comes to understand that there is a plot to foil the One State's plans.
