In addition to what's already been mentioned .....

- Are you doing any massive downloading or file transfer in the background? This can cause issues if your internet is running at 100% for extended periods.

- Is something/somebody else leeching off your internet? This can cause symptoms of being sluggish or unresponsive.

- Are you using a proxy network? Any issues those networks might be having become your issues.

If it's a DNS problem try using OpenDNS and see if the symptoms change.

This used to happen to me frequently a couple of years ago, I tried everything I could to figure out what was going on and my best guess was the router was old and wearing out. But then one day my ISP changed my external IP address and it never happened again.

I don't know if there's a correlation between the two, but that's my observation.
