Hello,
As the title states I am inquiring whether this ( http://www.theverge.com/products/nv50a/709 ) can run RS? I don't know much about laptops. A mate is offering it to me for what I consider to be a fair price. But I've never owned a laptop. If it can't run RS it's worthless to me. I know it's an old laptop, so if it could run RS I wouldn't expect more than eight and a half fps on medium graphics. But that's my question, can it run RS and to what degree? I just need something to use when I travel, to login and do dailies and whatnot. Maybe some afk minigames or skilling.

Thank you for your time and consideration,
Nerdgasm

if its going to run, yes, how well, think somewhere between 20-30 fps on either mid or high settings maybe more if you are lucky.

should be more than fine for what you want to do with it, as you say its for travel i assume you have a better one at home so yea should be fine

I think 20-30 on mid would be hoping for too much.
With it being an old basic laptop you might be able to push out 10-15 if you're lucky on low. It's still hard to say without knowing exact specs though.

Runescape uses a hell of a lot more memory than it use to and that won't change until they completely move away from Java. And that says 'up to' 8gb which leads me to believe its probably 2-4gb of memory, as are most old basic laptops, which is hardly even enough to be noticed today.

Thank you, from what I've gathered from your input this will most definitely run RS. It's just to what degree is up in the air. Like I said, this is just for traveling. Something I can use on holiday to do dailies and maybe some miscellaneous afk training at my leisure. My home PC is exceptional for RS performance (custom built). Here are the specific specs of this laptop in particular:
Mind the potato camera quality, not my doing but my friend's.

The graphics core of the HD 4250 stems from the Mobility Radeon HD 3400 series and is therefore DirectX 10.1 capable. Because of the missing graphics memory, the performance of the card is a bit lower than of the HD 34x0. Theroretically, dedicated memory chips can be directly added to the chip, making it a dedicated graphics card (called sideport). Because of pricing it is unclear if any manufacturer will add memory to the chip.

The 3D performance is heavily depending on the used processor. With a fast Phenom II CPU for example less demanding games like Left 4 Dead or Starcraft 2 were playable in low settings and resolutions. With a slow V-Series CPU however, only old games like Doom 3 or Quake 4 should be playable. Compared to older onboad graphic chips (e.g., GMA 4500MHD), the HD 4250 is much faster. The new Intel HD Graphics in the Core ix Arrandale CPUs, offers a similar performance, but the driver support by AMD should be better.

I don't know about computers either, but here's my suggestion: ask your mate if you could try running the game on the computer before you buy it from him? Unless you're ashamed of being an rs player.

I've had a desktop with an HD 4250 card - although, the desktop version is more powerful (apparently) than the mobile variant, I managed to get "decent" frame rates. The problem was I had extremely bad fps drops even on low settings - it was all over the place. The desktop I had was paired with an AMD Athlon x4 645 4-core processor clocking at 3.1GHz.

Honestly, I wasn't happy with the performance. The HD4250 card is just horrible and if the desktop version does poorly with RS, I can't see the mobile variant doing any better.

It should definitely be playable, but it wouldn't be anything exciting. You will get lag, and probably lots of it. It should be fine for what you need it for (afking, dailies and other low-intensity things).

If you want to minimise the lag, consider using the legacy interface - it seems more forgiving with frame rates and the drops aren't as severe. You sacrifice customisation for added performance in this case.

I use Legacy Interface Mode already anyway, so there's no issue there. I already purchased this, so I'm glad to hear from someone with experience with components of this device. From what you said I could imagine it being hellish to play on regularly, but as this won't be my primary gaming machine it sounds like it will suit my needs.
