The ferocious cats were shot and killed by the zoo staff after a man jumped into the lion enclosure in a bid to commit suicide. He even had a suicide note in his pocket.
According to reports, Franco Luis Ferrada, the man in question, climbed up on the roof of the lion's pen and forced his way inside the cage.
Once in, he stripped naked in order to make the lions attack him. The lions ignored him at first, but Ferrada started taunting them.
The crowd around the lion's closure watched aghast as the zoo staff, in order to save the man, first turned on the hose on the animals and then fired tranquilizer shots. However, the shots missed the lions and hit Ferrada on the neck instead, making him an easy prey.
As the lions gained upon the man, the staff was compelled to open fire with live rounds and kill the big cats.
The crowd watched, horrified, as the lions slowly succumbed to the shots. Ferrada, on the other hand, was rushed in critical condition to a nearby local health clinic with injuries to his pelvis and head, as well as a massive dose of tranquiliser.
According to the Guardian, Alejandra Montalva, the zoo director, defended the actions of staff. “The alarms sounded and chemical control arrived [tranquiliser darts] and an independent shooter arrived. The shooter decided to save the life of the person and unfortunately we had to sacrifice two members of our family,” she said.
Dozens of people arrived at the zoo on Saturday night to hold a candlelight vigil for the dead lions. The doctors taking care of Ferrada, meanwhile, were positive about his survival, however, the next 24 hours would be critical, they said.
Warning: unpopular, possible trigger incoming! Sorry
Lions would kill humans given the chance any day of the week. It's not like they're the most innocent creatures either.
Also it amazes me how we as humanity have litterally billions of people living under 1dollar a day, children starve to death by the hour and there are suicide nets in the factories where our phones are built because too many people jumped out of the buildings due to the work stress, but for some reason people don't seem to care about that as much as two fluffy, cute looking animals being killed because they were in fact killing a human themselves. I added fluffy and cute looking because if it would've been a gnarly looking animal that was just as endangered as lions we would never have seen this thread, I guarantee it.

Yep, it's like the outcry over Harambe. I generally agree that if it's a person being threatened by wildlife, even if it's their own fault, then the wildlife has to lose. That dentist who shot Cecil the lion, on the other hand, was a turd.

Denis Leary talked about that in one of his standup routines years ago, about how we only want to save the cute animals. If we're saving the cute little otters, people are like, "Here! Take my money!" If it's a cow, people say, "Forget it, I want a cheeseburger."
The facepalm moment in the lion story is how the guy with the tranq gun hit the human instead, and then they "were compelled to open fire with live rounds". Seriously? Their shooter is that bad? And they ran out of tranq darts? Don't they have anyone who knows how to handle lions? Circuses do it with some guy holding a whip and a chair.
And suicide by lion? That's not a real attempt, it's the classic cry for help. Too bad this guy had to involve all those other people and the destruction of probably-endangered wildlife to get the attention he needs.
