Hello and welcome to HLF Off-Topic Hockey thread!

The premise of this thread is to discuss anything that pertains to hockey. This will be strictly about hockey. I want to make this clear - do not break the forum rules upon posting on this thread. I want to refrain from any type of conflict that can possibly arise. If you have negative opinions about something, feel free to share, but if it is hate speech - do not share or I will try to have your post removed. I have created this thread for the purpose of discussing hockey in a manner that is welcoming and friendly to all. So now that is covered - lets begin!

Some questions to get the discussion started/continue!:

Which team(s) do you support?

Are you excited for next season? Why or why not?

More questions soon...

About me & why I created this thread

About me:

I am a huge Leafs fan. Growing up Dougie (#93), and many other players amazed me. I love'd watching my team win (they suck now). I watch every game with my family, because it is just lot more fun talking about situations going on in a game. Mostly make fun of my own team.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHfeUEOfi_0

I do not get offended when someone outlines that my team is terrible. Because I am not completely blind, I do know that they do not preform.

I do watch every other team. I love to see every game and see how they develop - see who is good and who is not. I love to break down teams. I am sure there are some of you that do the same.

Why did you create this thread?

I know I have outlined this at the start, but just want to make this clear for many who are curious. I want to expand whom I share things with and discuss up and coming events. I love talking hockey. My thread on HLF (no flaming please) has received so much support by many. I understand I will have people who will try and flame me for having it on both sections, but the fact of the matter is I cannot post links here - I cannot share everything I wish to. I love showing funny gifs and videos. Sharing documentaries. I can refer to it here, but it is not as it is seems to be made on HLF. I hope to see many of you discussing things.

Hockey History

Where was the first hockey game played?

On March 3, 1875, the first recorded indoor ice hockey game took place at the Victoria Skating Rink in Montreal, Canada. Organized by James Creighton, who also captained one of the teams, the game was between two nine-member teams, using a wooden 'puck'.

What country did hockey start in?

The game of field hockey is played widely across the world. Field hockey is, in fact, the second largest team sport in the world played in over 100 countries. In Canada it is a popular family orientated sport, played mainly in clubs by both men and women.

Where did ice hockey originate?

No place in Canada is there written evidence of the game being played any earlier, and since hockey developed from hurley on ice in Nova Scotia, until there is such evidence, I endorse and support the claim of Windsor, Nova Scotia to the birthplace of the wonderful game of hockey.”

Who made the game of hockey?

Based on Haliburton's account, there have been claims that modern hockey was invented in Windsor, Nova Scotia, by King's College students and named after an individual (“Colonel Hockey's game”).

Who is the greatest hockey point producer of all time?

Wayne Gretzky is the greater point producer of all time. This is known by many - due to the crazy difference in points he has on that of the person in second place. The difference is so much so, it would take Mark Messier (second place) 10 - 100 point seasons in order to catch up/surpass.

Who are the best players in the game today?

Who is the best forward?

Well in terms of points produced? It has to be Sidney Crosby. But due to the need of having an all around great game, I would have to give it to someone like Koiptar or maybe (need to see more at the higher level) the likes of a Connor McDavid.

Who is the best defence-man?

Duncan Keith. He is supported by a great player by the name of Brent Seabrook, but you have to give this guy a lot of credit - he is amazing. He can produce points and stop the puck. But also, there are so many amazing defence-man in the game today - cannot say who is best and make it seem like such a huge margin that cannot be passed. He is going to be in the Hockey Hall of Fame for sure - but many in the game today are for the future.

Who is the best Goalie?

This might have to go too the king himself. He is the most consistent goalie in the league. He plays amazing, but just doesn't get lucky. I give it to him for having an all around structured game and being calm in the net when needed to. Always giving his team a chance to win.

Who is on top?

Who is the top point producer?

Jamie benn won with 87 points. An outstanding finish with a final game to force himself on top - he tallied 6 points! That game!

Who is the best defensive player (+/-)

Max Pacioretty and Nikita Kucherov are tied for first for this. Max Pacioretty was on a line with slugs though for most of the season, but then again - he does have an outstanding goalie by the name of Carry Price in net to back him up. Nikita Kucherov has amazing linemates and is an outstanding player himself. He also has Ben Biscop to back him up with his flaws (but nothing on the level of Carry Price).

Who is the best player at staying out of the box?

Mark Letestu. Look him up. He is insane with his penalty minutes. Never went into the box not even once last season with 54 games played (rest out due to injury).

What are advanced stats?

What is Corsi (Or "SAT": Shot Attempts)?

An advanced statistic in hockey that measures the shot attempt differential of a player while on the ice including shots on goal, missed shots and blocked shots for and against. Corsi captures the differential of shots directed towards the net as an indication of the players ability to generate chances vs. giving up chances.

For example, if while a player is on the ice he gets a shot on goal, his teammates shot is blocked and an opponent shoots but misses the net, the player in question will see his Corsi Number rise by +2 (his shot on goal + teammates blocked shot - opponents missed shot).

What is "USAT" (unblocked shots)?

Same as Corsi/SAT, but factors out blocked shots.

What does "PTO" mean?

It stands for "Player Try Out". Refers to a player put on a conditional contact for the purpose of trying out to have an actual contract, which will not be outstanding of that of 1 year.
