Yeah I thought mine was protected too? Some old myth that maxed players get their username reserved to them. It just doesn't make any sense to me that somebody can literally use my LOG IN NAME for their Display name.

What's worse is that whoever has the name doesn't even appear on the 07 or the RS3 hiscores.

There's a grain of truth in this myth. The top 10k accounts on overall experience hiscores had their names protected (bound) when the name changing system came out in 2009.
Oh that is interesting.... I did not know that...

I believe I maxed at like 3000 accounts and then reached rank 109 overall the next year in 2011. But the name protection was only for <2009 maxers then?

This might explain why I can't get my old login name as my display name again, I roughly remember being ranked 3k or 4k something back in 2009, and changed my name a few times when display names became an option.
Never drop a valuable item.

lots of truth here!

It was right before the p2w era. They were certainly the best years of RuneScape.

Achieving 200m all was an insane goal, but not impossible. There was a perfect balance between afk methods and non-afk methods (Examples being: Ivy at 70k/h vs Teaks at 120k/h OR Rocktails at 50k/h vs Barb fishing at 110k/h iirc).

There was no p2w and no bonus xp. If you wanted 200m agility, you did Barbarian Advanced Outpost. Insane? Yes. But enjoyable, because it's not like there were other exclusive and better options available. Now, to optimize your efficiency you have to play a totally unrelated minigame for 900-1500k bonus xp/h and then throw 2.5b at Silverhawk feathers so you can get the skill to 200m losslessly.

The game was welcoming to all sorts of players. This goes back to afk/non-afk. You could be a pro and superheat gold whilst lrc mining or you could just afk it and bank the ores and then train the skill more traditionally at artisan's or even anvils. Smithing was a fast skill regardless so if you were to opt for the latter, you'd only waste an extra maybe 50 hours on getting 99. It wasn't a huge deal and it meant you didn't have to superheat over 200,000 gold ores.

Granted, it wasn't perfect. I don't think "efficiencyscape" was a bad thing. It never was and especially compared to what we have now, it even more so wasn't. What did certainly feel broken was cannoning cave crawlers for fast effigies and better overall efficiency over skills such as Runecrafting and Agility.

RuneSpan was a hell of an update. We needed that. But after the nerf, it became pointless. To this day, it's still nerfed. Now you craft souls for an afkable 400k xp/h. Maybe revert RuneSpan back, no?

cont. as I'm in the mood to ramble

It's easy to feel nostalgic about the older days and I do truly believe they were the better days, but like I said not everything was perfect back then either. Let me also quickly note that daily effigy assisting was a very strange way to train Runecrafting at 91+.

Nevertheless, the game only really required a few updates to be perfected at that point. We needed Runespan a little earlier on to tackle the effigyscape/assisting problem and perhaps we could've done with a more afkable but slower mining method and perhaps a few better agility courses.

I don't think effigies should've ever been nerfed as it fucked many people over who didn't focus on Slayer before the update. Nobody complained about the fun little xp rewards whilst training one of the most popular skills. Did it make any sense to get Agility XP during Slayer? No.. but we got Silverhawks today and many other things that really don't make sense... and besides, they were never that OP anyway. It's not like you'd get over 30m agility XP from 200m slayer.

The game has most certainly taken a very interesting turn and fortunately I've grown to enjoy it again. I just choose to not participate in all the things I don't like. All the things that I hated about the game, I don't do anymore. What ruined this game for me were all the dailies and all this crazy stuff to optimize efficiency. I miss the days of just logging on and doing Living Rock Caverns for 16 hours and being #1 on Runetrack every day for a week straight or logging on and doing nothing more than running some laps.

Now we have to do two caches per day, we have to do skillchompas, we have to do warbands (and hope not to die), we have to do our wicked hood teleports, we have to do this and that. Also make sure to run 3 alts at the same time to farm enough gold so you can pay for your silverhawks.

Anyway, like I said, I don't participate in all that anymore. I'll train divination old fashioned and enjoy it.

@op sounds like you love agility? I do to ;) I find it very peaceful while running laps and getting lost in my own little world.
