Though I'm not really interested in Mars, I'd like to go out of this solar system and into another, or possibly another galaxy. Exploring that would be far more interesting than exploring something like Mars but then again technology doesn't allow us to travel that far yet.
Maybe one day some mastermind will invent a machine that will enable us to travel anywhere in the universe, then shit gets real.
Unless we manage to travel through wormholes or at speeds similar to that of light, we're pretty hopeless.

Even if machines travelled at the speed of light, we still wouldn't be able to explore another galaxy or much of the universe for that matter. It takes a long time for light to reach us if it's really far away, we are looking into the past constantly anyway as the light from the stars (that are far away) is from 20, 30, 40 years ago so really we do travel in time every time we look up at the night sky.
If anything happened to the Sun, we would know 8 minutes later which is kinda depressing too!
Wormholes are our only hope, although their existence has not been confirmed yet.

Also would you even want to travel by the speed of light?
All your friends would die before you and there wouldnt be a point to return if you reach the end of your travels.
It's pointless travelling at the speed of light, you wouldn't explore much.
Better off inventing a machine from sci-fi like stargates or wormholes, those would probably achieve so much, yet are probably impossible or will not be seen for millions of years.

:U
We gotta start small, you know?
Can't expect to travel across galaxies without exploring this one first!
I think the speed of light would be a nice first step. I think the universe is amazing and VERY interesting.
But yes, wormholes would be our best bet for the final explorer goal.

Because ALL the planets in the solar system (and Jupiter's moon Europa) isn't much
