I have Beyerdynamic DT 990 PROs - I believe they're the same price range as yours - they were suggested to me as well - my instant reaction was something along the lines of:

"How the fuck have I used such shit headphones for so long?"

I love them though, have a cheap-ish Fiio amp with them and they work wonders, don't even have to have them too loud and everything is clear.

I wasn't expecting such a major difference when switching headphones. You don't know the generic ones are complete shit until you switch, tbh. Otherwise, you simply say: "Oh well, I don't mind them".

I don't know if getting something like a USB DAC would improve things even further. I currently just stick with on-board Realtek. Pretty sure I did notice a difference when switching to a PC that had a more "updated" Realtek codec (from ALC667 to ALC892 or something) but maybe that's some sort of placebo effect.

I didn't bother with a DAC, just bought an amp. I can definitely tell the difference with an amp, but my headphones are high impedance (250 Ohm)

Try turning muting everything, is there a slight hum or a buzz? If so, a DAC would be useful. The slight hum/buzz would be electromagnetic interference - a DAC helps eliminate that.

The ALC667 is built into your motherboard unfortunately ):
