Ridiculous but it's still a possibility. And if we really are alone, that would be rather depressing. Just because it's mathematically possible, doesn't mean it exists.
I like to think we're not alone. God, how interesting would that be to know that on another planet lives another organism and that Earth is not special at all, it's just one of many. Once we've located one other planet harbouring life, then it'd probably be safe to say there's more out there, but until we find it, thinking we're alone is a possibility and so far, is proving true
Perhaps life did exist but was wiped out before we could even detect it@
Maybe the universe works in a way that forbids all life forms (of other worlds) from communicating with each other. If this is the case, then we'll never find the answer.
NASA's discovery regarding Mars is a step in the right direction, though.

I have always liked the idea of a multiverse, so to me it seems very strange that we would be alone. I remember when I was 6-8 years old or so, I started thinking that it did not make sense that there is just 1 universe. I imaged that there had to be many of them, and that stacked like the different pictures in comic books, with each picture representing a new universe in which we exist as well, but as different versions. Then around 10 years later I heard for the first time about the "Many-worlds interpretation" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Many-worlds_interpretation).
Realizing that there's actually a theory about something I had imagined as a child (in a much more primitive manner of course) made me a superbeliever in the whole idea of the multiverse. Earlier this year or last year I read somewhere that astronomers are expecting to find hard evidence for the existence of the multiverse within 50 years. If that does happen, that would significantly increase the odds of life elsewhere. So all in all, I never thought it made sense to assume that there's no alien life out there.
Lets say there is a alternate Universe, everything would have to be exactly the same there as it is here. So what would even be the point in finding it?
If it isnt the same than you probably would even exist. Immagine if your dad made a different choice and married someone else. 1 small thing and you already dont exist in the other universe. Now immagine thousands of years of different choices. Everybody would be someone else there. They might even be more advanced than we are.
Today I don't think anymore that there would be alternative realities in the other universes. I still think there's the option for it (because if it's possible, why not?), but I just assume that it's a lot more likely that all of them will be unique with their own laws of nature.
