I remember when the firecape was the only "moving" item in-game and it was like its main selling point because it looked cool and now everything moves with particles and everything.

Interesting how times change.

If I remember correctly I think the very first time particles were used for was some christmas door to some snowy plane? And I remember it had snow particles blowing out of it...
