Can anybody tell me the best way to do sinkholes? Like should my focus be to explore all the rooms first? or should I focus more on killing the monsters?

I usually just run to some place where noone is and pick explore totem + kill all monsters, pick totem in next room and kill all npc's and so on. Not sure if its the best method tho.
